Club Rankings - Since 1991

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Can we come back in a few weeks and reassess? Hopefully the dogs will become first ranked at that point.

And I agree with comments further up - West should be ranked ahead of Glenelg for the time being.

Not sure why we looked at the period from 1991 though? Perhaps a better era to look at would be the last ten years, or the period since the Power entered the AwFuL as this created the current era of the SANFL?

1991 would be relevant, due to the formation of the Crows, which changed SANFL forever.
The impact the Power had was much lesser, but still a small factor.

The Power entering the competition created the current format of the SANFL. If you are going back into times before that, you are just as well in looking at 1921 when Glenelg entered or 1964 when Central and Woodville entered as 1991.

I disagree. When the Crows came in it reduced it to 9 clubs as it is now. Created the AFL feeder system, and also the general standard of the SANFL decreased considerably in 1991, but the standard decrease nowhere near as noticeable in 97.

However, now the SANFL has to provide players to two AFL clubs. This creates more disharmony with teams as there is the potential for twice as many changes to their side each week as a result of players going up to or dropping down from AFL sides. Surely this has an impact upon the clubs?? As this is the current conditions the clubs find themselves in, a proper analysis should be from 1997 onwards. If not doing this, then as said earlier, 1921 or 1964 is as valid as 1991.

Still dont agree. Massive changes in 1991, more changes in 97 but the major impact had been done when the Crows came in.

I agree that the changes in 1991 were greater than in 1997 however there were changes in 1997 that impacted upon the competition. As we still play under those conditions that came in in 1997, this is from when things should be compared. Otherwise, we are comparing two different eras. This is no different from comparing from 1921 or 1964 or 1870.

Up until 1991 the SANFL was the elite competition in the state, but with the formation of the Crows that year, the best players based in SA as a rule (although there are exceptions to every rule) played for the Adelaide Football Club. In 1870 and in 1964 the best players based in SA all played SANFL, but in 1991 that no longer was the case. Some people hate the term "feeder league" but in some ways the SANFL has been this since 1991.

I think you're just trying to eliminate years in which Port won a lot of flags and the Dogs lost quite a few (for the purposes of this discussion) ;)

Classic!

What bet the Centrals supporters would be arguing to include 1991-1996 if the doggies had won 4 flags during that time

Just curious, was that minor round ladder or "post finals"?

Anyone who doesn't regard 1991 as being the most significant date in the SANFL history is an absolute fool or is completely ignorant.
There was stuff all difference to the comp when the Power entered the AFL compared to pre Power era.
Its not rocket science.
