One hit wonders at your club

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Was interesting to read in the paper on the weekend the couple of pages in relation to Blight's book. Mentioned how Blight and Reid traveled extensively to look out for talent to recruit. Including Mt Gambier, which I presume was when they picked up Kevin Harris, despite him not being in Woodville's zone.

Got a number of players from that league in the mid 80's. The Ox was the best of them; Colin McDonald also played State footy.

I remember Roger Coudraye being discussed on another thread a little while ago. He was a teacher at my High School. Did he have much of a career before his injury?

I didn't realised Leon Twelftree was originally from Woodville? Is that his brother in the photo as well?

Buff Tyrell was so easy to pick out :)

How many clubs has Michael Flynn been associated with as a player/coach/admin staff?

Also interesting to see another Carlaw, any relation to the Roger?

Russell Hutton was at Sturt 1982-84 I think, wore number 5.
Serviceable player but a league regular.

From Port ;

Steve Knight - in about 84/85, wore #32 and came from St Kilda, IIRC. Reckon he only lasted a year, two at the most. Half-forward flanker by memory. Was also a handy medium-paced trundler who played a few C Grade (maybe even 1 or 2 B Grade..?) matches for PADCC around the same time. ;)

Steve Brosnan - Looked like he was gonna be a world beater when he was drafted by the Power in about 2000, played 1 AFL match, but faded away into obscurity, never added to his 1 match and didn't take the SANFL by the scruff of the neck like he promised. Think he was from the West Coast IIRC, so probably toddled off back there in the early 2000's. :?

Peter Crerar - Could've been anything if he didn't have kneecaps that popped out whenever he breathed. :? Had an extensive career for Broadies I believe, and indeed, was recruited from there. Pacy wingman who would've played a lot more SANFL footy if his body allowed it.

Wes Fellowes - 'nuff said. ;)

Good call on Chynoweth too. ;) Forgotten about him over the years. Certainly hard at it.

I enjoyed watching Crerar play, back flanker type who used to run straight and was very hard at it. Perhaps he went in too hard for his own good.

Only ever saw glimpses of him due to injury, but like Russell Boyd was great to watch when he was actually in the side.

I'm not sure about Fellowes, from memory he did nothing and was a complete dud at Port.

Chris Dalkin, I thought, showed a bit, circa 1987. Not sure if he played more than one season.

I remember seeing Crerar dislocate his kneecap (3rd or 4th time he popped it) at Alberton vs West Torrens on the right half-forward flank in front of the bowling club, and being carried past on a stretcher by the trainers, patella sitting out on the side of his leg.....NOT where it should be.. :ymsick: Little did I know I'd suffer the same fate about 12mths later in a game of b'ball. :( Can confirm it doesn't tickle.. ;)

And yes, Wes Fellowes was a complete dud.

How can we mention duds from St. Kilda without remembering David Strooper?

Not quite. Won a Copeland Trophy (Collingwood's B&F), but didn't do much in the ol' black'n white prison stripes. :?

Found this little summary that describes his stint with Port Adelaide fairly accurately ;

Fellowes, Wes
23 games, 7 goals (1991-1992)

Wes Fellowes was a towering ruckman from Collingwood who was recruited by Port to fill the enormous gap left by Russell Johnston.

Fellowes was a Best & Fairest winner with Collingwood so his stint with Port Adelaide must be considered less than successful by his standards and he returned to Victoria during the 1992 season.

And from Wikipedia..

"He was quite a skillful and mobile ruckman, but his work rate was always questioned by the football public. He played some consistent football after an improving start to his career, and in 1986 he stunned people (  ), winning the Copeland Trophy. He would fade away late in his 102 game career, and finish in 1989."

Anyone remember John Ahern? Me, either. CHF (?) who came over from North Melbourne. Played two games. Later!

Brad Gotch wasn't much better in his eleven games after crossing from Fitzroy midway through '85.

Peter Crerar was unlucky. Nine games. Two knee recons. That footage of him being stretchered off at Thebby with the bone poking out was sickening.

Chris Dalkin only played the one year. Eight games.

Steven Knight came from Footscray - had a great season in '84, kicked 37 goals.

Not so great the next year but then '85 was a pretty miserable year for the club on-and-off the ground.

Sacked early in '86 after a punch-up with team-mates at the pub. IIRC, he claimed he was sticking up for his girlfriend after some "comments" about her.

Pretty sure his last game was the great comeback win against Glenelg at Alberton.

Reakon he kicked the sealer late in the game.

Northers won the McLean Medal that year.

But big Wes still came third in the count!

Must've surprised a lot of people...

Geoff Mcmillan
Was a recruit Norwood got from the Richmond
I saw his debut
Pretty sure it was Adelaide Oval against South Adelaide in 1980
He injured his leg[knee form memory]
I reckon it was early in the game ?
His injury was so bad, he never played another game for the Norwood League team

Slightly off topic, but sorta on topic, Aaron Fiora's first 4 games for the Maggies were as good as any I've seen in my time, and that includes the likes of Bradley, Buckley, Anderson, Waterhouse (don't laugh, his '95 season was sensational! :P ;) ), Didak, Abernethy, etc, etc.. But geez, how disappointing was his AFL career?!? :?

Back on topic, Tony Martyn made his way to Port Adelaide from Melbourne about halfway through the '81 season and played in the premiership side of that year against The Bays. By memory he wore #24. He headed to Tassie the following year & won their Magarey Medal equivalent. Would've been handy to hang onto him for a while. :D

Brother of Patrick Brosnan, who I think played with Port as well.

Here's some more info on him. He is now living in the NT, Katherine maybe.

River News 29/1/03
Waikerie Magpies sign former AFL player

In what could be the coup of season 2003, the Waikerie Football Club has signed former AFL Port Power player, Steven Brosnan for this year. The highly talented key position player spent last year playing with his brother at Wonthaggi in the Gippsland Latrobe league and before that was with Port Power. The 24 year old spent most of his football career with the Port Adelaide Football Club coming through the ranks of the Under 19's, reserves and then with the SANFL Magpies before being picked-up by Power in the AFL competition.
In total he had 40 games with the Port Adelaide and comes to Waikerie with a big reputation. Brosnan is no stranger to the Riverland Football competition having played for Loxton for one season in 1996. Jon Matthews, together with the recruiting committee are thrilled with the signing of such a high profile player.
"We spoke to him last year, but he went to play with his brother in Victoria." Asked how they managed to pull off such a coup, Matthews said, that Brosnan works with a former Waikerie travelling player, Neil Foster, who had last season away from the game because of a severe knee injury.

Played a few games. Pretty fiery from memory. Later crossed to West.

Chuck Wangas in there, too! Pure class even as a 16 year-old.

IIRC, Fiora polled six vote in the Magarey that year. Two BOGs in your first four games ain't half-bad! Damn unlucky to be squeezed out of the premiership team.

Clive was awesome in '95. But one Jack Cahill quote has always stuck in my mind. Not so impressed with Clive and Troy Olsen one day:

"I've got the best two half-forwards in the comp running around like long-haired louts!"

Pretty spot-on...
