I think Motley & Greer became Motley & Ebert and then Ebert & Weston. I'm not sure but I believe Hughes and Loveday may still be operating.

Hughes and Loveday is still operating at Albert Park, although not a retail store to people off the street anymore.

mal wrote:Yes NM played ST in a trial game on 9/9/78
The game was played prior to the Elimination Final at Football Park
NM won the trial by 56 points
Gary Hardeman had his left cheekbone fractured
The game was reported as being of high standard and an entertaining match

ST supporters at the time must have had mixed reactions to this game, and this injury
NM travelled here for the match, would the travelling have affected thier VFL finals campaign ?

QUESTION
Would anyone have any recollection of this match

I certainly remember the game Mal. That other famous Mal(colm) Blight had a day out. He must have kicked about seven goals.

Given that Brian Adamson kicked 5 goals in the Grand Final on the previously mentioned Graham Reed, Gary Hardeman's injury was very untimely for Sturt.

Blight was sensational, even to Sturt supporters, kicked 11 goals.

A journo started him match summary by saying both sides escaped injury. He then went on to say Hardeman suffered a mild concussion and would be available next week. Jounos never change do they? :)

FEBUARY 8
Melbourne give Gary Hardeman a clearance to play for ST
The amount paid for Hardemans clearance is believed to be over $30k

FEBUARY 7
CD cancelled a pre season trial vrs ML at the direction of the SANFL
The ban was made by the league following the VFLs announcement that it would not participate in the NFLS proposed 1978 series

SA announced thier new skipper Geoff Baynes
Previous skipper Graham Robbins left to coach Penola
Baynes won the 1977 B/F for SA

NW recruited David Armour the former Geelong and East Perth Player

GEOFF BAYNES
Genuine trier, not blessed with exquisite skills, but made the most of his ability
He used to play for WWT ?

GRAHAM ROBBINS
Almost the exact opposite to Baynes
Robbins was mercurial and had skills to burn, was a pleasure to see him in action
He used to play VFL b4 coming to SA ?

DAVID ARMOUR
Played mainly half back flank
Played well in defence for the legs, and made a good decision to come to the SANFL

I don't recall Baynes playing for WWT, I think he would have retired by 91 when the merger occurred.

I do recall though after his playing career finished, he seemed to switch to a new club every couple of years in an assistant capacity, even including Port at one stage.

I remember Baynes as being one of those South players that were almost unbeatable in night matches back then
Linke was another.

What made South so good under lights early 80's yet so crap in the day ?

It became known as Sportslover. Wayne Stringer became a partner and Grantley Fielke managed the store at Arndale. They must have had 3 or 4 stores at one stage.

They always took the night series seriously. A lot of the other teams didn't.

Another thing was that South weren't complete crap at that time.

Actually from 1977-84 was the longest period that South have been competitive since World Was 2. They made the finals in 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983 and 1984. I believe that in the 66 years since full competition resumed in 1945 they have only made the finals 12 times 1964-1966, the aforementioned 5 times and 1990-92 and 2006. Not a great record.

I think I remember Rodney Robran having a store at TTP in late 70's, early 80s.

Wayne Stringer ran the Sportslover store at Glenelg, and this store sponsored the 85 Premiership T-Shirts sold at GFC. In the 85-87 finals series Wayne loaned me Glenelg guernseys for the staff at Medicare Glenelg & Marion to wear in the GF lead up week.

I think his first fight was with Adelaide High School who tried to stop him playing league footy at 15; but he and North prevailed. He was a fiery player but a very good one too who ended up at full back later in his career. He did have two or three years "around the grounds" with 5AD in the 2nd half of the 80s. Good bloke.

His first fight was indeed with Adelaide High but he was 17 or 18 in 1964 when that occurred. I always thought that his best positions were Centre Half Forward and Full Forward. For example in the last minor round game he kicked 8 goals for North out of 10 that North scored. In the 1966 first semi final he played an exceptional game at centre Half Forward. I though that it was a waste of talent for him to play permanent back pocket on the resting ruckmen in North's 1971 premiership side and although he was a good full back at Glenelg he almost seemed to brilliant to play there. I guess by the time he got to Glenelg he had lost a bit of that run and jump that he had as a youth which enabled him to play ruck even though he would have only been about 6 foot 2 inches. He represented the state spasmodically from 1966 through to 1974.

He never seemed content at North and it seemed every second year he was in a contractual dispute which meant that he didn't start his season until about May. Finally after playing in the 1971 North premiership he suddenly was cleared to Glenelg, a move which may have just cost North 3 flags in a row.

I can remember a game at Prospect in either '68 or '69 and at the first bounce the opposing ruckmen were Anderson and Murray Weideman. The ball was bounced and Weideman just ran through Anderson, knocking him out.

FEBUARY 16
NA player Greg Smith goes back home to Victoria for employment reasons
Smith was recruited in 1976

SA rover Phil Cox is hopeful of playing RD1 after a knee operation

FEBUARY 17
Carl Fragomeni has an operation to remove wire in his right elbow
This was the same injury that caused him to miss the 1977 Grand Final

FEBUARY 23
The NFL announced thier 15 game + 16 team knockout comp for 1978

SMITH
Cant remember him

COX
Rover with SA

FRAGOMENI
What a brilliant back pocket
Use to burst out of defence and his rebound was a feature of his play
Originally form Western Australia
A truly great back pocket

NIGHT COMP
Was reasonably popular at the time, as any Victorian /South Australian games or comps were
Used to go and watch them , something different
From memory they were played mid week at night at the parade when NW played
Was it that several teams didnt back up well on the Saturday day games in the SANFL ?
I remember that announcement about this impending comp, I thought it was OK, unlike the garbage they are trying in 2011

That would have been 1968. Anderson returned the favour in the First Semi Final that year. No love lost between those two.

Image

From the match report...
The first bounce saw Peter Anderson clash heavily with Murray Weideman. He did the same thing seconds later at a boundary throw-in and again a few minutes afterwards. "The Weed" came off secons best on all occassions Anderson made sure he was not going to be flattened the way he was at Prospect Oval and decided the best way was to go on the offensive from the start.
