I'd just like to thank AH for the time he's put into selecting these teams.

Great effort.

I also say well done on this, perhaps we may get some discussion if all of the teams are posted on another thread all in the one go. :)

Anyway, here is W, as I think it's best to combine V, Y and Z into one team. And no players having had a surname beginning with X.

Maybe we should combine all the "difficult" letters ... I, Q, U, V, & Y into one team?

Thanks r&b, I was hoping for a little more discussion as we had about Jack Broadstock, but I've enjoyed the research, and learned a few things about some players I never knew :)

F: Steve Traynor, Clayton Thompson, Greg Turbill

B: Michael Taylor, Arthur Taylor, James Tierney

Coach: Johnny Taylor
Captain: Johnny Taylor

Well, AH, I won't pass that invitation up, so I'll have a look at each team from (mainly) a Westies point of view, for discussion only as I think your efforts will be hard to argue against.

Starting from the 'T' team above, I would have thought that Doug Thomas would be a bit stiff not to be a starter. State football at full-forward and full-back and over 200 games would have him close. On the other hand, James ('Sorry') Tierney rightly gets a guernsey. (surely one of the great nicknames). perhaps we could name a team of the greatest nicknames of all time. It would have to be coached by 'nickname', of course.

Stand by for more when I can.

You could be right. He was limited to a FF or FB position. I wouldn't rate him ahead of Candles Thompson who booted 10 in a state game, but I'd certainly consider him for FB in place of Arthur Taylor. Once again, it's so hard when you're basing someone's ability purely on reputation.

I saw Doug Thomas play when I was a kid. Very solid and hard in the Neil Kerley mold, not brilliant or spectacular, but reliable.

Here's my W team. Not entirely happy with it as a lot of similar style players vying for the same positions, so there may be some obvious ones I've overlooked.

Sorry for all the Norwood players but it's just the way it worked out :)

F: Ted Whelan, Ken Whelan, Jim Wright
HF: Gary Window, Ern Wadham, Roger Woodcock
C: Glynn Williams, Mark Williams, George Wallace
HB: Sid White, Paul Weston, Peter Woite
B: Greg Whittlesea, H "Tom" Warhurst, Bruce Winter
Ruck: Kingsley "Bill" Wedding, John Wynne, Fos Williams
Reserves: Norm Walker, Alan White, Jim West, Hendrick "Taffy" Waye, Neville Way, Tom Woodroofe

Coach: Fos Williams
Captain: Fos Williams
Vice Captain: Sid White

He was my first picked after Fos Williams ... 600 goals from a HF flank ... outstanding, and didn't make Norwood's Team of The Century which still amazes me.

Perhaps Craig Williams would be thought of for the bench.

Not many All-Australians would miss out :)

Thanks for that. I was tossing up between him and Warhurst for FB, then forgot to place him in the reserves :)

I'm calm and content. I had been sitting silently to this point, and was going to have a complete tantrum if he missed out. The Norwood thing and the non-team of the century appearance still has me right off my game.

Actually got a signed guernsey from the great man in the mail about a week ago, after someone from this site pointed out to him that there was a very sad bloke quite obsessed with him.

I reckon it's the greatest present I've received in my life. \:D/
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

Actually got a signed guernsey from the great man in the mail about a week ago, after someone from this site pointed out to him that there was a very sad bloke quite obsessed with him.
I reckon it's the greatest present I've received in my life. \:D/

Because my older sister took me to matches with her when I was a child, I saw him play. I can't see how he didn't make the team of the century either, but most such teams are biased towards more recent players after the big names have been placed.

Agreed, that most are biased towards the recent players, except that Norwood went and put in a fair few blokes from 80 90 years ago. Without going off thread and starting a whole diatribe yet again, it's just my view that our team of the century side had too many guys played out of their key position, whereas a couple of blokes who were absolute stand outs in one spot were squeezed because we had guys shoe-horned into other roles, just to make the 18 or the team.

No more about it from me unless we start a new thread. All up, the W's are very strong
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

I might bump this thread, because I'm interested to see what team AH can make out of the remaining letters. ;)

Why not! My wife, utterly unaffected by family bias of course, thinks her cousin John Steer, who played for Woodville with Barry Ion, should have been considered for the "S" team....

I'm sure you've made one of our posters around here very happy!

He was my first picked after Fos Williams ... 600 goals from a HF flank ... outstanding, and didn't make Norwood's Team of The Century which still amazes me.

I've gotta say as someone who has done a bit of research on the war years Sawley's inclusion is more than warranted, but I would have at least had the dodger on the bench.
