Peter Motley

Postby am Bays » Tue Aug 07, 2007 10:37 pm

For those of you with Foxtel, right now they are showing the 1986 VFL GF which Motley played in.

A chance to see one of the greats in action...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Motley, Kernahan and Bradley all going to the 1 club at the one time

They were also pursuing Platten strongly ....

The first VFL draft was held the following season - we'll never see Carlton's cheque-book recruiting drive ever happen again thankfully (for the sake of the comp)

If you read Platten's autobiography, he tells the story of how he signed at Carlton and spent the sign on fee on a commodore.

Then went to Hawthorn. Kept the sign on fee too from memory.

He sure did. Nice vehicle it was too.

Interesting about keeping the sign on fee - wonder how that was viewed.

Well bugger me, my memory isn't as bad as I thought.

How many flags would Carlton have won, if Motley was not injured and Platten had turned up in the navy blue? That's a staggering side, just with the SA players. Add the existing Victorian component and they would have been simply awesome.

He pulled up behind me in a large Mercedes at a servo in Salisbury one evening.

I guess he did pretty well overall from his playing days.

I was working in a servo about 10 years ago and platten filled up his 4WD and had no money to pay for the petrol.....he said he was good for it, and came back later and paid.
