Glenelg Hall of Fame

Postby am Bays » Sun Jul 29, 2007 9:55 am

Two inducties last night...

Marcus Boyall, 1941 Magarey Medal winner and player of 49 games for the club. Catain/Coach for part of 1940 (he resigned to concentrate on playing) Career cut short by WW2.

Tony Symonds 225 games 230 games, 2 time premiership player, coach 1995 & 1996 and one of the great club men in the history of Glenelg. In my first year at the Bay I was walking from Hove station to the Bay Oval for a 17s and 19s game. Next minute a car pulled over an offered me a lift (I had my Glenelg tracksuit top on) It was Symo, he didn't now me from a bar of soap but recognised the tracksuit and decided to help. he is typical of people at all clubs, just a good bloke.

Well done to both...
Symo played a important part in my all time favourite goal I've seen...

Central had scored a behind at the Northern End, Gibbsy took the kick in...a HUGE screwy into the middle of the bay, with big Supe and the Central ruckman one out...Supe deftly palmed it to a dashing Symo steaming past, one bounce, goal....

All in all took about 15 seconds for a coast to coast...SUPERB !

I reckon Symo was a link man (or on the end of) a similar goal in the 2nd quarter of the 86 GF

Well deserved for Symo - a great bloke and very loyal Glenelg person and I'm lucky to have him as a mate - especially seeing as he manages 3 pubs in close proximity to my house!

I think you mean this one Hondo, this has to be a favourite goals of yours Sjab, it is mine:

Wayne Henwood punches from behind following a Peter Bennett free kick into Norths half forward line, Mark Donovan picks up the crumbs and gives to McDermott. Bones pumps it forward, where Hall attacks the footy and takes a grab over Mick Parsons. On hands and knees Hall gives it to Maxy Maynard who gets on his bike and carry's the footy towards the edge of the crentre square, he takes a bounce and spears a pass into the forward zone to where Adam Garton is on a lead. Befotre it gets to Garts, Symo intercepts the ball on the fly, he runs, steadies and pierces the perpendiculars from 30 m for his 3rd goal. "Oh, the Bays are on fire!! 10 2 to Norths 3 2" says David Darcy.

As Daisy Day says: "This is unbelieveable football by Glenelg. They're pinpointing the passes brilliantly, that one from Maynard actually hit Symonds while he was flat as a strap, he didn't have to break stride and he booted a most magnificent goal. And Glenelgs first quarter and six minutes has been the best football I've seen all season"

*sigh - memories*

Tassie

Yes, that's the goal!

At one stage it was 11-2 to 3-2 and us North supporters were devestated as Glenelg unveiled one of best first half performances in a GF ever

Great to see Symo honored!!
230 games! I wonder how many reserves games he racked up before he became a league regular.
I remember noticing him playing quite a few. Or was that just because he stood out.
Played a season at hawthorn too.

Absolute champ! Well Done!

I've got to admit as an "outsider" his inclusion surprised me. I always thought of him as a "good, a bit above average player". Certainly not in the first group of names I think of when I think of champions from "the evil enemy" in the 80's.
Can anyone supply a list, or a link to the list of names in the Glenelg Hall of Fame? I'd like to see it.

LL the club in its wisdom doesn't list its Hall of Fame recipiants on the website

Full points footy lists the original Hall of Fame inductees (2002) here: http://www.fullpointsfooty.net/all_star_teams.htm#Glenelg

the following names have been added:

2003 John Seebohm and Laurie Rosenwarne
2004 Stephen Copping and Wayne Phillis
2005 Tony Hall and Nick chigwidden
2006 Ross Gibbs and Doug Long

I think Symos induction this year is warranted, yes he wasn't in the best players of his era (Carey, McDermott, Hall, Gibbs, Seebohm, Hodgy, Marshall, McGuinness, Kernahan etc) it is right that he get a guernsey now.

It is probably reflective of our success (lack there of) that people like Symo get a guernsey as over the next few years we may struggle to come up with nominations of the ilk of the people currently in teh HOF.. Certainly since 1991 other than Chiggy our only other players to play 200 games are Simon Hele and Allan Bartlett. Not sure if Bobby is someone you want in a hall of fame given his achievements.... :D .

Our only other 200 gamers missing are Twiggy Caldwell and Chris Duthy

So really we are going to find it tougher to find future inductees given our lack of success.

Cheers Tassie. I did check the club's official website looking for it but I didn't think to look on "Full Points Footy" and I've written stuff for him.
You'd think looking at who is in there that Twiggy would be shoe in for next year. I'm guessing they feel Eustice didn't play enough games at Glenelg.

Could have even just done a simple search of this website too mate, we had a full thread on it last year:

My photos must have been crap as I didn't get an invite back. :(

Mr. Symonds not only played in a premiership era but has also coached the senior team, filled in as runner, and is still seen on the hill at games more often than not. That (in my eyes at least) makes him much more a legend of the club than many others from his era, irrespective of their relative playing abilities.
