Its interesting because in essence you counted the "final" in some years and not in others.
Im not saying its wrong or right, I honestly don't know to tell the truth, just that it may be the reason for the discrepency.
This could be a great discussion point for the SANFL History Forum.

North lost in 1923&26 and West Torrens in 1925 but because these teams didn't finish in the top
two, they reverted back to their placings before the finals started.

I seem to remember being told about the right to a challenge final if you finished top off minor round and failed to win the grand final (I think) --- is this correct --- if so what years or any info on it please

Not Port v Norwood, of course-- that's always a chance of happening even if they finished last and 2nd last in the previous year. Some matchings are just written in the stars.
PS One more for spell_check (or other stats guru) if you have access to other states' records: is the Port v Sturt 1965-68 record of 4 GFs in a row an all-time Australian record (for what could be called 'first class' competitions)? Just comparing it quickly with WAFL and VFL(AFL) records, the only match that I can see is East Freo v East Perth from 1918-21.
Of course, both AFL and SANFL currently have live 'streaks'; although the nature of AFL these days is such that it would be near-impossible for the same 2 teams to meet in a GF 4 times in a row. (As a Swans supporter, I hope I'm wrong in saying that.)
