Could the discrpency lie with the Final/Challenge Final system and what is recorded as a GF for these purposes?

For instance you don't list 1930 as a Port v Sturt GF but they did play off in the final (with North beating Port in the challenge final after losing to Sturt in the semi).

Perhaps Spelly counted Finals and Challenge Finals as GFs? Probably would make sense as either could be the ultimate and last game of the season?

Theoretically, I counted games which decided the premiership, which is basically
what the Grand Final is today.

Its interesting because in essence you counted the "final" in some years and not in others.
Im not saying its wrong or right, I honestly don't know to tell the truth, just that it may be the reason for the discrepency.
This could be a great discussion point for the SANFL History Forum.

Just looking at those stats, it amazes me that North and South have only met 2 times in a GF considering they're both over 100 years old and have won 24 premierships between them. Similarly with Norwood and South, haven't met in a GF since the 19th century!

Yep thats right , I counted the final game played, regardless of whether it was called the 'final' or
'challenge'.

What I did, and it looks pretty stupid, is that I just looked at who came 1st and 2nd!

This of course takes out a few factors now that I read Mr 66s' list. :(

Either list still comes up with the same fact - that Central and Eagles have met the most in GFs' than any other combination excluding Port.

Mr.66s' list I would now regard to be the correct list; given that it is the exact criteria I was after in the first place.

You'll find that in 1923 Sturt finished 2nd, ditto Port in 1925&26 but neither teams played in the GF.
North lost in 1923&26 and West Torrens in 1925 but because these teams didn't finish in the top
two, they reverted back to their placings before the finals started.

The 1979 Grand Final Budget explained these discrepancies fully (Page 61, if anyone has it).
If not, I'll post it tomorrow night.

If you lost the 2nd Semi but finished top you went straight to the Challenge Final.
If you won the 2nd Semi, finished top, but lost the Final, you went to the Challenge Final.

Of those in the top 10, which is the least likely to be added to any time soon? Port v Sturt, Port v West, Norwood v West or something else?

Not Port v Norwood, of course-- that's always a chance of happening even if they finished last and 2nd last in the previous year. Some matchings are just written in the stars.

PS One more for spell_check (or other stats guru) if you have access to other states' records: is the Port v Sturt 1965-68 record of 4 GFs in a row an all-time Australian record (for what could be called 'first class' competitions)? Just comparing it quickly with WAFL and VFL(AFL) records, the only match that I can see is East Freo v East Perth from 1918-21.

Of course, both AFL and SANFL currently have live 'streaks'; although the nature of AFL these days is such that it would be near-impossible for the same 2 teams to meet in a GF 4 times in a row. (As a Swans supporter, I hope I'm wrong in saying that.)

Here goes,
TFL
Glenorchy v Sandy Bay 1975-78
Northern Territory FL
Darwin v St.Marys 1968-71
Honourable mention
ACT
Manuka v Eastlake 1963-1969 except 1966.
