Legends of SANFL - Panther Power & Roger Woodcock

Postby McAlmanac » Wed Aug 27, 2008 10:11 pm

Folks,

It has been a long time since the last update to Legends of SANFL. This has now been corrected and the Panther contingent has been beefed up. There are pages for Robb Hawkins, boundary rider Ron Hateley, Brian 'The Whale' Roberts, John Schneebichler, dependable Craig Cock and Panther icon Jim Deane.

Due to a special request, there is a much overdue page featuring Norwood champion Roger Woodcock. There are also new pages for Sturt champ Sandy Nelson, Norwood's Ross Porritt, Glenelg and Norwood strongman Wayne Phillis, nippy Rooster Terry Von Bertouch and the Big Hot Dog - Eagle Greg Hodson.

I trust you'll enjoy the new additions.

Greg Hodson a "legend"? Is that pushing it a bit far?

You undersell Sneezers role at Glenelg. I would have thought playing in a GF is more worthy of a mention than kicking the dew off the oval.

Was a loyal servant of the club too in an off field capacity for over 10 years.

Still see him at the Bay for past player events and is a seen in the cricket club at the occasional home game.

Top bloke, Sneezer
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

The Von was a very good player in some very good North sides. He would have collected himself 4 best and fairests as well if he hadn't had the (mis?)fortune to play in the same side as some bloke wearing number 10. He was runner up in 1968,69,71 and 72. He also came third in 1973.
I was dirty on him going to Norwood and not back to North when he returned from the country in 1977, but it was recently explained to me why he did it and all is forgiven! :D

Fine work. It was a stated goal of mine to increase the recognition for the great man. Nice old photo too.
Some of us can rest easy now, and just concentrate our energies on the campaign to get the Norwood Team of the Century re-selected properly.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

I've always been rather bemused that the FULL FORWARD in the AFL Team of the Century kicked 537 career goals, whereas Norwood has a HALF FORWARD flanker who kicks 602 goals, and can't make their Team of the Century.

No other club, be they AFL/VFL, SANFL or WAFL would have overlooked a 600 goal HF from their team, and yet Norwood elected to do so. Absolutely ridiculous.

ROGER WOODCOCK.
Better players have played half forward.
But no one has played half forward better for the Norwood Football Club.

I have no recollection of Hawthorn being interested in him, I only know of Carlton's which was evident very early in his playing days.

As I said it was a very long time ago and pre his SANFL league days .
Just out of interest he was training with Woodville juniors before West Torrens realised he was living in the West Torrens area .
And Mickyj was struggling to play anywhere

Brian "Whale" Roberts used to have his South Adelaide lace-up displayed in his bar. He never made any secret of the fact he played for South Adelaide, so it may be more common knowledge than you imagine. It is also recorded in the Encyclodedia of AFL Footballers that he played in WA & SA before going to Richmond.

For the record, he played 57 games for South Adelaide from 1965 to 1967, and represented South Australia 3 times.
