the premiers' leading goalkicker

Postby Pseudo » Wed Mar 12, 2008 3:03 pm

Just glanced at the goalkickers list for last season, and noticed that the premiers' leading goalkicker was Daniel Havelberg, coming in 11th overall with 39 goals. Incredibly all but one other club has a player above Havelberg in this list, and Westies leading goalkicker (Kewpie Doll) was only 2 goals behind him. Speaks volumes that the dogs don't rely on any particular goalscorer yet consistently flog everyother team.

Now for the trivia question (spelly, on your mark...):

Has it ever been the case that the premiers' leading goalkicker has been outscored by at least one player from every other club?

D'oh! #-o

Well according to the list on the front page, Callinan played for "Cen" whereas Havelberg played for "CD" - clearly two different teams

But yeah, the question remains.

98 and 99 is a possibility maybe.

In 98 Bryan Beinke kicked 39 goals.

In 99 Paul Evans kicked 35 goals.

In 1998 Justin Scripps top-scored for Glenelg with 21 goals  , 3 more than his top-scoring effort from the previous season .

In 1999 Ben McEntee top-scored with 28 goals.

So at most Beinke/Evans might have been outgoaled by 7 of 8 clubs' leading goalkickers.

Close but no cigar. He beat Henry Dabrowski (34) of Torrens and Ray Huppatz (33) of Woodville.

Mind you he finished well down the list

1 - Fred Phillis (G) 102
2 - Gary Jones (CD) 91
3 - Roger Woodcock (Nd) 61
3 - David Saywell (CD) 61
5 - Mike Coligan (Nd) 51
6 - Peter Howlett (SA) 50
6 - Eric Freeman (PA) 50
8 - Malcolm Greenslade (st) 49

11- John Cahill (PA) 44
12- Glynn Hewitt (WA) 39

Michael Parsons (46 goals) in 1991 would be as close as it gets - only Darryl Borlase (Port, 25) and Stephen Schmid (South, 40) were lower, along with the 1971 example above.

Just another shining example of legend status. On a starvation flank in a horrible team and finishes third in the goal kicking. I love this man.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

The horrible team managed to finish 5th for the second year running. It was the genesis of Norwood's strong run in the next two decades.

David Jonas kicking 46 in a team that finished 8th and won six games for the year is probably equally noteworthy.
Ah, the heady days when Westies won 6 games in the one season.

1933 is one example I've found. Merv Waite was Torrens leading goalkicker with 35 goals, behind:

Ken Farmer (North) 112
Geoff Green (Sturt) 80
Edgar Bennetts (West) 74
Clem Rosewarne (Glenelg) 74
Jack Owens (Glenelg) 73
Christopher Munro (South) 72
Heinrich Krome (Norwood) 51
Bruce Schultz (Norwood) 49
Ned Hender (Port) 48
John Ritch (Port) 40
Alby Wundersitz (Sturt) 36

Merv Waite also played a test match for Australia. Unfortunately for Merv it was the 1938 Oval test where England made 7 for 903 declared!!!!
