:D

Looking at the ladder Spelly put up, 1988 really was another one the Bays let through their grasp - coming from the Elimination final to the GF wasn't really a commendable feat as they should never have been playing in the Elimination final.

do you have to rub it in like that FH?, having said that the eagles between 94 and 05 let a few slip from their grasp as well ;)

I still have some highlights on VHS of that Westies comeback v Port with Simister kicking the winning goal.

Some of the best ABC commentary I have ever heard- Rocky Roberts was going crazy. I think Steven Trigg was part of the team too.

"Loving he's a left footer, he wants to get on it, he'll do anything to get on it. Finally pops it up to the square-SIMISTER. Yes. Yes yes yes!"

Classic stuff.

Sorry Stampy. The context of the comment was that as a kid I remembered Norwood, Port and Centrals being the teams to beat, not really the Bays and I thought the Bays were middle of the road, when really they weren't.

Don't forget 99 and 07 PF losses if you're having a go at the Eagles too ;)

Wasn't McDermott who missed the sitter?

For some reason, the only thing I can remember of this game is his pained expression after a gimme goal went begging.

Could be the Donovan miss, mind you.

Didn't do yourselves any favours having to come from the Elim to make the Grannie so many times - 1982, 1987, 1988, 1992.

And I really wish you didn't kick 11.23 in the '84 Prelim.

As for the game at woodville in 1990, i started walking towards the southern gate at about the 20min mark of the last, all but conceding defeat, by the time i had reached the goals we had booted 3 in about 3 minutes so i hung around and saw us pull a win out of the fire, the following week i thought we were gonna make it 2 in a row when gibbsy went for the glory kick  , see him now and again and never let him forget it :D

1988 was quite possibly one of the best seasons in our memory Stampy.
For the quality, crowds and eveness of the competition ( a very good North side missed the finals) it was a terrific season IMO.
Besides Magpiespower listing just the close calls from Port, there were no doubt many others too and the final 5 could've went a few different ways up until the last minor round game or 2.

1964 SECOND SEMI FINAL

PA...1-0...5-4.....7-5......14-8
SA...4-6...8-10...11-13...13-13

BEST
PA... POTTER , FREEMAN, HANNAFORD,HUDSON PHILP, FABIAN
SA...BACKMAN SHAW,OBRIEN,SCHMIDT,SKUSE,ROSS

MOST GOALS
PA, FREEMAN 4
SA, BACKMAN 3

PA came back from a staggering 32 points down at 3/4 time

Some snippets of the last qtr
PA produced the greatest last qtr comeback in a major round for at least 30 years
5 minutes into the last qtr, after each team had scored a goal, PA still trialled by 32 points
10 minutes later the scores were tied
Trevor Obst kicked a point
Eric Freeman kicked a freak goal to give the magoies a 11 point lead
At he 22 and a half minute mark Peter Darley marked and goaled from 40 yards
It was one point the difference but tht was the last score of the game
___________________
FOOTNOTE
That was the report I read, the scores didnt add up in the summary,as SA kicked either the 1st + 2nd goal and then the last one, perhaps it was a 7 point lead not 11 when Peter Darley kicked the last goal

SUMMARY
Whatta game, SA revenged this defeat by winning the 64 Grand Final, and thier last flag as well
Fritzy Freeman ended up playing Test Cricket but used to have hamstrings as bad as Shane Watson
Trevor Bubbles Obst was a Mag Medalist soon after, and a taxi Driver about 30 years later
Lindsay Backman became a footy commentator, and a feared punter in the 90s
Peter Darley opened pubs ?
Lester Ross became a name in the Greyhound Industry

IIRC, Woodville kicked the first goal of the last quarter to go 40 points up...

Think you're right.
