Does anyone know about Max Basheer's playing career? I believe he played amateur league, and may have a connection with Sturt, does anyone know if he played any games for the Double Blues?

I have sent an e-mail to Max asking him about his playing career.

In the interim, I looked it up on Wikipedia. It states Max was a state Amateur League rover (doesn't say which club) who was denied an SANFL playing career when North Adelaide refused to clear him to Sturt.

from the list of state players 1925 to 2003 on the SAAFL website a MR Basheer from University played in 1949
Also in that year SA got smashed by the vics and a comfortable win over WA two months latter

Again? Sounds like there is a bit of history when it comes to getting the Roosters to clear players! Wonder if Hargreaves has rung him up for any advice?

ha ha, I was waiting for that!

I've been told on good authority that Norwood refused to clear a player in 1920 and it was payback for that!

A former North great once told me that the reason Basheer wanted a move to Sturt was that his family believed that Sturt FC were a more fitting club re "social standing" than North - nothing to do with football oportunities etc. As a result of no clearance to Sturt, the Basheers have been very anti-North in both business and Football. Maybe he didn't like the pork roasts on Sundays at Prospect?
