1960 Grand Final - a kick in it

This probably should be a question for Spelly

A lot of people may be aware that North Adelaide defeated Norwood in the 1960 Grand Final by 5 points. Score: North Adelaide 14-11, Norwood 13-12.

However, what some may not realise is just how tight the competition for the flag was between those two teams over the season.

Other matches were:
Round 3 (Norwood Oval): Norwood 11-11, North Adelaide 9-18 Norwood by 5 points
Round 11 (Kensington Oval): North Adelaide 11-19, Norwood 12-10 North by 3 points
Round 15 (Prospect Oval): Norwood 11-11, North Adelaide 10-11 Norwood by 6 points

So all 4 games decided by a kick, North and Norwood both winning twice.

I imagine there has never been a contest over a season between 2 teams to equal this one, but Spelly may come with something :)

In 1897 Norwood and Port met four times during the season, on the 15th of May, Norwood won 3.11 to 4.2; the 17th of July, Port won 3.10 to 3.7; 31st of July Port won 5.7 to 5.1 and 1st of September the scores were tied at 2.6.

The 3.11 to 4.2 scoreline represented the first time that a side that had scored more goals than the other team, but lost the match.

This is the only other time that four matches in a season have been decided by 6 points or less between the same teams.

There have been other instances of four meetings decided by 6 points or less but spread over two or three seasons:

Port Adelaide vs North Adelaide: Round 5 and 12 in both 1934 and 1935
West Torrens vs West Adelaide: Round 6 and 12 1939, Round 2 and 11 1940
West Torrens vs Norwood: 1st Semi Final 1954, Round 2 and 9 1955, Round 1 1956

The last two on the list are the closest collectively - both having combined margins of 4 points in four games!

But the best contest apparently was between a North and a Norwood player who were good mates and went on a pub crawl lasting a week immediately after the game. Legend has it that their binge was reported good humouredly in one of the two papers at the time. One wonders whether something like that would be reported in good humour these days?
