Facts are, it was based on a combination of success and attendances in the 70s and 80s.
Like has been said earlier, the SANFL ratified the notion with their programming.

You are shooting your arguement to bits if you mention the words "success" and Glenelg in the same quote. If success was a major indicator in the reasoning for the Big 4 arguement then how do you explain why North wouldn't be included?

You may have some case for pointing to attendances but like all clubs - winning more games than you lose and being a regular finalist always helps crowds, unfortunately North's ability to not be a consistent finalist year in year out through it's history and especially between 1974-1982 ensured it's attendances were down as expected. The Nunan era certainly improved crowd attendances as North were much more consistent performer overall in that period.

And as for North fans who feel "peeved" about being left out of the Big 4 arguement, you should look back to your clubs powerhouse history since it's inception and tell me which club allowed you to win 3 of your 4 flags! ;).

As I always say to my friends who support Glenelg, be thankful North is in the SANFL otherwise your club would have 1 flag to show for all it's years in existence. ;)

Ah Drebin, we're delighted North are in the SANFL. Prossy Oval is one of our happiest hunting grounds, let alone GF day.
Analyse it all how you like. Fact is, not one SANFL club's record home attendance was recorded against North. The biggest crowds in the competition were largely recorded among games involving the "big 4".
And yes, North won as many flags as Glenelg in the 70s and 80s but only because we sucked in most GFs ... on a pure win-loss record, the Bays had it all over North.
Looking fwd to the next objection ....

Okay let's get selective and argue on bits of history and era's that favour our clubs.

Tell us about the pre-Kerley era's and the post Cornes era's and don't forget to include your win loss ratio in that

You have digressed here Drebin ... We're talking about the 70s and 80s.
I understand your inferiority complex. 13 premierships yet you feel your club has never been afforded the recognition it deserves among the elite.

Inferiority complex? Compared to who - Glenelg??? As for elite surely you are not putting Glenelg above North in that category???

Anyhow I await with anticipation the release of the book on the official history of the Glenelg Football which apparently according to the non inferior covers only the 70's and 80's. Seeing as I live at the Bay I'll pop into the club tonight and make a start in removing the years before Kerley and after Cornes from your honour board! I better be careful not to trip over the overflowing trophies you can't fit in your massive trophy cabinet at the same time.
