Lightning Premierships

Postby spell_check » Wed Mar 19, 2008 8:02 pm

Something which I don't think has ever come up on here are the Lightning Premierships that were held in the 40s and 50s. I have some of the results I took down when I first compiled the Seasons scores:

10/6/1946:
Port 2.2 4.5 (29)
Norwood 0.1 1.1 (7)

West 3.3 4.5 (29)
Torrens 2.2 2.2 (14)

North 3.0 4.5 (29)
South 3.1 3.1 (19)

Sturt 2.1 3.5 (23)
Glenelg 2.2 3.2 (20)

Semi Finals:
West 3.0 4.0 (24)
Port 0.2 2.2 (14)

Sturt 4.0 6.1 (37)
North 1.2 2.3 (15)

Final:
Sturt 2.3 5.6 (36)
West 2.2 4.3 (27)

12/7/1947:
North 4.5 5.3 (33)
South 2.0 3.1 (19)

Glenelg 1.5 3.8 (26)
West 0.2 1.4 (10)

Sturt 1.2 2.2 (14)
Port 0.1 1.3 (9)

Norwood 5.1 6.2 (38)
Torrens 0.1 3.3 (21)

Semi Finals:
Glenelg 1.1 4.3 (27)
North 1.4 1.5 (11)

Sturt 0.0 4.0 (24)
Norwood 2.0 3.2 (20)

Final:
Sturt 2.1 5.4 (34)
Glenelg 1.1 2.1 (13)
Crowd: 17,325 Takings: 923 pounds

5/6/1948:
North 2.3 7.3 (45)
Glenelg 1.2 4.3 (27)

Port 5.1 5.4 (34)
South 0.4 2.11 (23)

Norwood 0.1 5.2 (32)
Sturt 0.0 2.1 (13)

Torrens 0.1 2.4 (16)
West 1.3 2.3 (15)

Semi Finals:
Port 2.0 5.1 (31)
North 1.3 2.3 (15)

Norwood 2.2 6.3 (39)
Torrens 2.1 3.5 (23)

Final:
Port 1.1 5.1 (31)
Norwood 1.1 2.4 (16)
Crowd: 12,300

All matches except the final were two 14 minute halves (not sure if there was time on) and the final was two 20 minute halves.

Spelly you might want to dig up the results for the "nine a side" lightning carnival held at Wayville during some sort of sports expo in 1993 (?). All I remember is the Bays knocked Port out then themselves got knocked out by North, who went on to beat Central in the final.

I don't have any results on this, but when in the year did this happen? I could find out next time for you.

I remember it well, bloody hot sitting in the Wayville stands watching the mighty Roosters win a premiership.

It was part of a sports "fair" (for lack of better word) held at Wayville.

Spelly don't know if you are aware but there was a lightning Premiership held during the war on August 28th 1943. It was to raise money for The Childrens Hospital.
The Prize was a trophy donated by the SANFL and 20 quid.

PA-WT1.2 2.6(18)

WA-G 3.1 10.2 (62)
S-SA 4.5 4.5 (29)

N-NA 4.2 5.7 (37)
WA-G 4.5 4.9 (33)

No, I didn't know this one; only the scores I have. But if you or anyone else have more scores of Lightning Premiershps that would help. :)

Didja go and look at the "fair" at all Wedgie? I went and had a look around in between the Bays games. All I remember now is the lasses on the Women's Football League stall grabbing my missus and giving her the hard-sell recruitment spiel

The 1950 Season was the 7th that the 8 clubs had played up to that date. It was played on the 24th of June, and the first round was drawn up using the positions at that time (after Round 9)

(7th) Sturt 1.3 3.4 (22)
(5th) Torrens 0.3 2.4 (16)

(8th) South 1.3 2.3 (15)
(6th) North 0.1 0.6 (6)

(4th) West 2.2 2.4 (16)
(2nd) Glenelg 2.2 2.2 (14)

(3rd) Port 1.2 2.4 (16)
(1st) Norwood 2.2 2.2 (14)

Semi Finals:
Sturt 1.4 2.6 (18)
South 0.3 2.5 (17)

West 1.1 1.3 (9)
Port 0.0 1.0 (6)

Final:
Sturt 1.0 3.3 (21)
West 0.3 1.4 (10)
Crowd: 9,300

Only 1950 - 24/6/50. I'm alright with the 1943 details, but thanks for asking. :)

Alright, thanks to Panto for this, the scores I had as 1951 were actually the 1946 carnival.

It was a One Day Knockout Premiership for the Gosse Shield held at Adelaide Oval for the Adelaide Childrens Hospital and won by Norwood North Football Club.
(coincidentally I took this photo of Norwood's Gosse Shield about 7-8 years ago in their old clubrooms - North also have one I think)

Enjoy
