Time distorts memories, but I reckon Harris's torpedo was a good 60 metres.

1984.Harris intercepted a short pass from R.Ebert in the dying seconds of the game. The siren sounded and Harris went back took a deep breath and sent a torpedo through about post-height.
These days 'ol southies reckon it was at least '80m!: but I reckon it was about 60m .It was a truly great win.

That was bloody amazing that kick. I was watching it on TV because it was a Sunday game from memory. Obviously I was going for Souths vs the common enemy. I reckon he was pretty hard on the boundary line and he was hell of a long way out. In the days before the 50 meter arch was painted on the ground it was hard to tell how far, but it was easily 60 meters, probably closer to 65 meters IMO. I really thought he had no chance, just too far out, but when he let that screwie go it just kept on sailing, and sailing. A huge pack of players had formed in the goal square, Monday's Advertiser caught the moment well with a photo side on to the action, showing Danny Hughes ( I reckon) with the perfect sit at the back of the pack, and the ball just passed his clenched fist. I reckon in all that ball had to travel an extra 5 meters to beat the pack, I reckon it was coming down at a pretty sharp angle after being in orbit so long. In all the kick possibly travelled about 70 meters.

Another famous kick after or on the siren, Western Australia vs South Australia as Footy Park in about 1984. WA player, named Ball I think, kicks a hooked running goal on the siren and WA win by about 3 points.

Harris was about 45 degree angle mate and I reckon he actually kicked a drop punt, which back in those days was unheard of over such distance.

In the state game, the umpire was Mike Ball ... From memory Robert Wiley kicked the behind (IMHO) after the siren, but before Laurie Argent would have heard or signalled it.

Craig Bradley had a late kick from the boundary to win it for Port .... I can't remember if it was after the siren or not. I do remember the ground being absolutely packed as North had started their mid 80s resurgence.

Port actually won that game by 8 points. North led by 37 points at 3/4 time, but got run over when Ben Harris went into the ruck. the game was in 1983 at Prospect.

First game of 1996, Brendon Parker kicked agoal against West after the siren to win the game, albeit from point blank range.

Lucas Herbert kicked a goal from about 45 metres out into a breeze to tie with Norwood in 2003. That was the year where North won one game and drew two.

Peter Bennett kicked a goal after the siren from about 45 metres out to win an Escort Cup match in Jamestown in 1986.

Marc Marshall missed from about 35 metres out to cost North the game against Glenelg in early 1992.

"Last kick" Fred Pemberton won two games for Glenelg in 1959, both with the last kick of the day. I know that his goal against North was 10 seconds before the siren, I think the other one may have been in the first semi final against Sturt. He would be an interesting player for football historians to investigate. I believe that 1959 was his only season in the SANFL and that he was about 36 years old at the time.

24 games for St Kilda from 1948-50 and birthdate 1923 - would be the same guy.

Two games which haven't been mentioned... which I saw as a young kid. Sturt v Port at Alberton in 1967 (I think). Keith Chessell kicked a goal after the siren for Sturt's first win at Alberton since WWII. Also Sturt v Port at Unley in 1968. Roger Rigney kicked the winning point after the siren which the umpire had not heard (should have been a draw). Was anyone else there that day. My recollection as an 8 year old was that they had had trouble with the siren all day.

It certainly is the same blioke.

I wonder where he played for all of those other seasons. He would have been 25 to 27 years when he played at St Kilda.

Re the Sturt v Port game in 1968, I believe that was the record crowd at Unley Oval.

Spell-Check, have you got crowd details for that game? And also the score which I think was St 6-9-45 d PA 5-14-44

Thanks spell_check. I'd love to see them squeeze 22,000 into Unley these days.

Be lucky enough to squeeze in half that with half the room now. Out of all the grounds in the League, I would have thought that Unley (pre 1986) would have had the least amount of room. If that ground could get 22,015, imagine what Elizabeth or Noarlunga could get with the same density crowd.

By the way, the quarter scores for that match were:

Sturt 4.3 5.5 5.8 6.9 (45)
Port 1.2 4.10 5.13 5.14 (44)

Some of the all-time crowd records are almost unbelievable.

20k+ at Norwood and Unley
60k+ at Adelaide

Edit: WTF? Where did my post go?
Basically said, imagine a game of footy where one side doesn't kick a goal from half time to full time, and then kicks one after the siren to win the game by a point!
Then I noted that Sturt and Port played off in their 4th consecutive head to head grand final that year, obviously the two juggernauts of the time.
Throw in the crowd of 22,000+ and there is one of the all time sporting classics IMO.
It sounded better the first time I wrote it, but the internet has robbed us of my original words.

P.S. In those days there was a smaller stand on top of a large bank of terracing where the Jack Oatey stand is now. Capacity would have been a lot larger than the period pre-1986 which used to be very squeezy with a crowd of just 12,000 or 13,000.

Second Edit: Just read Ash59's post.
So it was a point after the siren... hmm that robs it of a bit of that sporting classic moment feel. Apologies for the hyperbole.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Round 6 1984
Central 2.0 7.4 10.7 14.12 (96)
South 4.7 9.10 12.15 13.17 (95)
Elizabeth, 7102

A free kick for holding the ball was awarded to Tano Barilla. From 50 metres out in the pocket, his shot landed about a metre out, and the South defenders could only manage to deflect it through for the winning behind. A few seconds later the siren sounded.

Bah, (sticks in heels) I'll need something a bit more concrete than the word of a couple of Norwood supporters to make me change my mind on this.
