According to The Register (20/8/1898)

They mention....

"......and the men who reside in Sturt are Campbell, Hay ,South Adelaide: Correll, Finlay, Grayson, Green, Padman, Norwood: and Woods(2), Woolard, and Fisher (2), West Adelaide."

There is also mention of the possibility of Gawler re-entering the comp when the system is adopted, as well as the possibility of an "East" (!?) Adelaide joining the Association. It also mentions...

" At present there is no likelihood of a Sturt team being started."

Clubs who were in the association in 1898 were...
South Adelaide, Port Adelaide, Norwood, North Adelaide, West Torrens, West Adelaide.

If there is any mention of sturt pre 1901 it could relate to Marion as I'm sure that is what they used to be called.

Just checked it and here is a link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Football_League_(South_Australia)

The writer from the Observer seems to think Phil Newland was the best player in the competition followed by Tierney(West) and Waye (Sturt).
