WEST ADELAIDE OCTOBER 1908

Postby mal » Mon Oct 06, 2008 8:44 am

100 years ago as reported in The Way We Were article in the Advertiser

_______________________________________________________________________________
It is stated, says the Patriot that 15 of the WA footballers have signed a pledge against alcohol until they are 25.
They won the Premiership all the same.
At the very least thier total abstinence did not injure them.
They managed to travel in 1 season, from the bottom of the list to the top without the aid of beer.
They found out by experiment what is now an open secret, namely, that successful athletes avoid alcohol drinks.

The way we were articles are ones I always read and just goes to show how even 100 years ago what sides would do to gain an advantage on the footy field

Question is did Coorong see that Grand Final ?
Question is about 80 years later a NA full forward proved you can dring booze and perform.

That and the fact that were coached by Jack Reedman, who was one of the earliest tacticians in football.

And the amazing thing is, 100 years later in a so-called "professional" era, a lot of highly paid players are still yet to get the message.

And Champions of Australia in 1908 as well. I tried to alert Westies to that fact, but of course now being run by Victorians it fell on deaf ears.

What? The club is well aware it's 100 years since 1908. What do you expect them to do, hold a players' reunion?
And BTW, where's Glenn Elliot from?

A similar theme could be used by the current players as i think the Party Club culture needs to change for us to move up the ladder.
