minor premierships

Oi spelly

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did Glenelg just break the longest current minor premiership drought in the league? What are the longest minor premiership droughts ever?

Thanks, oh masterful one....

West Adelaide, 1927 to 1983 would be my guess.

Glenelg didn't win one from 1921 until 1969.

West Torrens were minor premier in 1924 and didn't do it again until 1963.
Sturt were minor premiers in 1933, didn't repeat untill 1966.

There are possibly others, I'll let Spelly do the rest.

South was the one that come to my mind straight away as they didn't finish 1964 as minor premiers.

Good get Spelly. I was thinking South won the minor premiership in 64, but they didn't. Just goes to show we can't rely on memory 100% of the time :)

I think Psuedo is talking about current streaks without a Minor Premiership.

IIRC prior to last Sunday the year clubs were last minor premiers were:

Glenelg 1981
West 1983
North 1987
South 1991
Norwood 1997
Sturt 1998
Port 1999
Eagles 2006
Centrals 2007

So yeah Psuedo we are no longer last on that table either
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I was talking about both: current streaks, and all-time streaks.

Thanks to all.

Minor Premierships Since 1907:

Central District: 1979, 95, 96, 2001-05, 07.
Glenelg: 1969, 73, 81, 2008.
North Adelaide: 1920, 30, 32, 52, 58, 60, 67, 71, 72, 85-87, 89, 91.
Norwood: 1908, 22, 23, 25, 29, 37, 41, 46-48, 50, 75, 97.
Port Adelaide: 1907, 09, 11-15, 21, 28, 31, 34-36, 39, 40, 45, 51, 53-57, 59-62, 64, 65, 70, 76, 77, 80, 82, 84, 88, 90, 92, 99.
South Adelaide: 1938, 91.
Sturt: 1910, 19, 26, 33, 66, 68, 74, 78, 98.
West Adelaide: 1927, 83.
West Torrens: 1924, 63.
W-WT Eagles: 1993, 94, 2000, 06.

Interesting to note that from the 93 minor premiers to 2007, 54 went on to win the flag, 26 finished runner up, and 13 missed the Grand Final.

Everyone recalls Sturt's period of dominance, 5 flags in a row from 1966 to 1970, but in that time they only won the minor premiership twice. Just shows how good Jack Oatey was at having the team at their peak when it mattered most.

Also North Adelaide having won 3 minor premierships in a row 1985-87, they finished in 8th spot in 1984, and in 6th spot in 1988. They have never played in the finals 5 years in a row.

Glenelg surprises a little with only their 4h mimor premiership this season. I honestly would have thought they'd won more.

West Adelaide surprises with only 2 as well. I have tended to think of them as a very strong club over periods in SANFL history. I guess for Port Adelaide hogging all the minor premierships - 38 in all - there wasn't much room for anyone else :)
