Basically, Port, Norwood and VFL officials - Alan Schwab was one, I think? - met in a hotel room to discuss joining an expanded VFL competition.

An article in the Footy Times 1985 yearbook advocating Port and Norwood joining the VFL - as either two separate clubs or a merged entity - was a sign of things to come.
