A question for spelly

Postby Mickyj » Sun Jun 15, 2008 9:27 pm

Not sure what forum to put this in.
So here goes .My lad and I were talking at the footy today and he said .
If Ron Fuller is not Coaching next year and Roy Laird is (assuming that the dogs win the flag in 2008 or the eagles do).
How many times has only 1 coach in the SANFL been the only coach to be coaching who has won a flag? I hope I got that right.

cheers

1959. Jack Oatey (West) was the only premiership coach and he'd won the premiership(s) at Norwood. Geoff Motley was the new Port coach and yet to win a flag.
In 1945 Bob Quinn (Port) was the only premeirship coach. Jack Oatey (Norwood) was yet to win one.

That's a start. Over to you Spelly......

And here I thought that we were running out of questions! :)

A very good one this question, 2001 was the last time, as only Stephen Williams had coached a flag(s). In 2000 it was the same scenario, but carried over to 2001 when Jonas left.

I may have to look into it further, but I can't recall off the top of my head between 1960 and 1999. I know that through the 90s there was either or at least two of Cahill, Cornes, Nunan, Winter, Rohde or Williams.

And since 2002 there has been at least two of Williams, Clarkson, Phillips, Laird or Fuller.

What I might do is put the coach(es) from each club, each season into a table so I can work this question out better. :)

In the centenary year, 1977, seven of the eight "established" clubs had a premiership coach, and after Grand Final night all eight had a premiership coach.

Five of the coaches had coached SANFL premierships - Oatey, Hammond, Kerley, Williams and Patterson. Cahill of course, won the flag that year to technically make six.

A seventh, Nicholls had coached a VFL premiership and an eigth, Bunton had coached WAFL premierships. The only two coaches without ultimate success were Window at Central and McInnes at Woodville.

And both of those had coached Seconds premierships with Central District and Norwood.

I'd have to do that table up, but I wouldn't be surprised if the answer was when there was no appointed coach - like the 1910s! ;)

OK..Make it from the "modern era" i.e 1950 onward....

1950 onward I'm pretty sure would be never. Oatey, Williams, Kerley would have been coaching for most of the time and then Cahill, Balme, Nunan. Maybe after Cahill went to the AFL when Williams first took over Port. 1996 possibily

Bruce Winter was still coaching in 1996.
