Why are behind posts in SA red?

Postby JF_Bay22_SCG » Mon May 22, 2006 10:26 pm

Hey gang,
JF from Sydney here.

I sit next to a Crows (& Sturt) fan at work. We got chatting about SANFL footy & SA culture. The topic got onto why the behind posts in SA are all red?

Does anyone have any reasons for why they started to be painted red, & more succintly why they all were painted red? It is a historical things that has been going on for decades? If the behind posts used to be white, when were they changed, who changed them & did they give any reasons for it?

You just don't read things like this on http://www.saculture.com somehow (but I DID learn about frog cakes though! 8) )

a curious JF in Sydney (who will be over in SA on July 29 for a big day at Prospect & AAMI 8) )

I've never heard an actual reason, but I've always assumed it was to tell the behind and the goal posts apart. It's not as silly as it sounds. Just ask Malcolm Blight

Tassie (Map of)- Cornes isn't the only Tassie Medallist-
G (Graham?) Molloy (Norwood) won it in 1969.... I will say Cornes is the ugliest Tassie Medallist though...

Yes Punky I'm well aware Graham Molloy was the Tassie Medalist of 1969, the first South Australian to win the medal....

All I can think of is that it may well have been to do with the white seating behind the goals at Prison Park?

But then again, there used to be terracing when Footy Park was first built, wasnt there?
:?

I recall watch SANFL Grand Finals and remarking that it was always hard to see the point posts. But then you get a normal SANFL crowd and you couldn't see the actual goal posts because of the white bench seating.

It still doesn't answer my questions as why the SANFl adopted red behind posts for all footy grounds in the state. :?

Trainspotting time.
Actually the first South Aussie to win the Tassie Medal was R.Furler (son of the legendary Percy). Unfortunately he was playing for the A.C.T at the time.

I know that the point posts at Woodville are white, but the padding that goes on them are red. I don't know why.
