I read today of the recent death of Max Hall. An icon of the early days of SANFL TV telecasts.
Also an SANFL Umpire. He features regularly in the SANFL Archive pieces from Channel 9 coverage.
Condolences to family.

The SANFL is mourning SA Football Hall of Fame Member Max Hall OAM.

Inducted into the SA Football Hall of Fame in 2007, Hall not only officiated as an SANFL field umpire for 80 matches during the 1950s, he became one of the most recognisable voices in his role as a television and radio commentator.

Renowned for his trademark saying ‘’Comment Wally May’’, Hall was a commentator on station 5KA from 1958 to 1971 while also hosting the Channel 9 football show from 1966 to 1979.

On the field, he umpired the 1955 SANFL Grand Final and was also the SANFL’s umpiring representative at the Australian Championships in 1953 and 1956.

The SANFL extends its deepest sympathies to Hall’s family and friends as he made an outstanding contribution to the game in South Australia.
