Young Coaches

Clay Sampson is relitively young as a League coach nowadays but i'm sure there is plenty of examples of younger ones, particularly in the era of Playing coaches. Have you, or other posters got some examples?

Junior - was 19 or 20 when appointed captain/coach at Norwood.

Haydn Bunton II was appointed coach at 19 in 1957, but didn't play that season because he wasn't cleared by North Adelaide. He was captain-coach in 1958 at 20.

Merv Keane took over Sturt think when he was 30 or 31. I reckon of the most recent coaches he'd be the youngest.

Blight, Cornes, The Jumbo Prince, Paul Weston (without looking it up) I would think would've been slightly older.

Of the young coaches interstate, Sheedy and Malthouse were young when they were appointed. Sheeds and Malthouse were about 33, 34 from memory.

Neil Balme was 27 when appointed coach of Norwood in 1980.

More recently than Merv Keane, Steven Trigg was only 28 when he got the job in 1991. Sturt's youngest coach, at 22, was Len Fitzgerald.

Kerley was 27 when he coached us in 1961, and Bob Loveday was 26 when he coached us in 1972.
