Thought I would split off from mals gambling thread so I don't derail it.

Talk about favourite sites, whether poker actually is gambling, etc etc

That would have been awesome haha.

Pokerstars have a home game functionality now. Maybe if we have enough interest i can set up a tournament whilst Friday night footy is on? (Not tomorrow as I'll be at the crows )

Pkr is probably the only major site I have never had cash on so I can't really comment. Probably even calling them major is a big stretch.

My top poker sites
1. Pokerstars

Something like 80% if the total market. Unrivalled really. You HAVE to have an account if you take the game seriously. Best variety.

2. 888 poker. My personal favourite of the smaller sites. The tournaments in Aussie night times are good value but also relatively small fields so they finish before bed time :)

3. Full tilt.

Not really worth it anymore, virtually no traffic.

I just think all online card games are rigged

Tell me what reason a poker site would have to rig cards? (Having super users aka ultimate bet is a different matter)

The issue with online is you have 80 hands an hour per table 250 of you talk zoom. Compare that with 25 or so in live poker. So when I play 8 tables I can play 400 or more hands per hour. Which could be 20 times more hands (and bad beats) per hour!

they are rigged because I lose.

I think its fairly obvious.

Happy to concede I might be miles off here .. But I always felt the SnG's had an element of rigged to them (not necessarily toward any specific individual). Have seen some crazy stuff on them that I've seen so infrequently IRL (where Ive seen far more hands). My thinking was that the quicker they pushed through the SnG's, the quicker they could open new ones, as they don't run to a time schedule, but whenever all the seats get taken up.

I would expect that like a poker machine, they would expect x amount of turnover in a period of time, so seems plausible to me.

Like I said, very happy to be corrected on this.

Nah honestly it's not like that. The thing that gets people confused is the absolutely insane variance that occurs. It can occur in lots of different ways - two of the most common are just running below expectation - ie when you are 70% to win but only win these scenarios 60% of the time.

The other scenario is how often you are dealt hands. Ie you should get aces on average once every 221 hands and you could easily go 1000 hands without getting them.

The main reason you see more "bad beats" in sngs is because the structure is shallower. What that means is you get less chips to start and the blinds go up more aggressively. As a result the average stack is much shorter so therefore people are all in much more often.

This is also why the luck factor is more - less decisions per hand as there is basically never turn and river play - another reason why good players can't win as much money because there are less decisions per hand for them to be better than the bad players.

So you have an added magnification - more hands per hour AND more allins.

And btw the way they get more sngs per hour is just to change the structure as described - no need to rig them.

If you guys like I can show you my graphs over around 5000+ tournaments which shows I have been break even for more than 1000 tournaments and gone on long downswings but the graph is also profitable.

That makes fair sense BM .. The other thing I forgot to mention was that id had my suspicions agreed with by a mate who is/was running one of the states Pub poker brands. And it's not just a case of taking this opinion due to constant bad beats (because I certainly benefitted from them aswell) it was just the amount of insane results coming up on hands that at times it was kinda coming predictable.

I actually did alright out of them, but just stopped once I had the mindset it wasn't a "true" game.

Perhaps I better dust the software off and give it another crack.

Perhaps we need to reinvigorate the home games in the near future

Great idea. Who was the admin of the previous game?

I believe mickey was the main admin and I may have been also but mickey did all the work to set it up.

Just have to work out the best time.

Friday nights during footy season may not be the best

For me at least it would be THE best time. Just play whilst watching the footy. But I guess a lot of people might go down the pub etc. Thursday night whilst watching the footy show and doing our fantasy teams could also work :)

If you have all the home game codes I would love to join and we can try and get it started again one night.

the games can be set up for anytime, its just a matter of enough interest

yeah exactly

the home games are excellent. i havent played in a little while but im part of a group that has a weekly home game, and we put in $150 or so at the start of an 8 week season, and then at the end, the winner of the season gets a buyin into a $1000 live poker tournament of their choice with 50% of themselves, and 50% shared between the rest of the group. its a pretty cool way of getting one of us into a higher tourney. had some decent success too, with two of us cashing for a combined $22k or so
