tab sportsbet is going to be betting in the run on the melbourne cup, for those that don't understand it's basically if you think a horse will win as they go past lets say the 800 metre mark you can (according to their spokesman mr munsie) use the net or ring up & get a set price at that particular stage of the race etc etc....mr munsie said it was a first in australia

What a crock, Betfair having been doing this for 18 months on all metro races and now do country meetings also.

From a punting point of view betting in the run = likley imminent losses for recreational punters
The punters who put the hard work in will clean up as they will assess the chances of horses pending where they lob

Ive had one in the run bet at the gallops
That was a Betfair promo free bet that I had obtained

No thanks

I watched a race at Toowoomba yesterday, the favourite loomed up with 100m to go, hit the front by about 1/4 of a length and looked the clear winner. However the inside horse which looked beaten found something and came back to win.

I looked at the Betfair live betting records and over $900 got matched at $1.01 - some idiots took the $1.01!!!! and some geniuses LAYed it.

betting in the run i would think is good for backing the backmarkers that swoop home

If you can get a look at a jumps race from the UK with AP Mccoy from during the week, it is simply amazing. The horse was in front and after the first circuit, the horse basically refused to carry on, so he pulled it up...all the other horses ran past it and he kicked it back into action. It came from last to win by a length. AMAZING viewing I will try and get a link for it. It was matched at 999/1 in running!

Betting in the run is not a recent phenominen
Back in the 1980s the Adelaide Bookies would be taking bets when Interstate races were on
Most races there would be a clamour of punters backlogged in the queue frantically trying to get on
Was common to get bets on at the half way mark in those races

This happened one day
Bookie Brian Moyle
Sydney races [betting at Cheltenham]

"' Bernard is 2 lengths in front at the 200.....""
"" $10 each way Bernard .....""

It won and a young long haired man won $155 in a 200mtr race !!!

I often hung around and got on after they jumped in those days

My computer is that slow that they are past the post by the time it registers

Betting 'live in the run' at the TAB would be a joke with all the DH once a year punters holding up the show.
