Avatar = Gift.

Avatar is certainly the logical choice, but the hype in the US about The Hurt Locker is massive*. Will open here in March to coincide with the awards. Difficult to see anything outside these two taking it out, but the subject matter of the THL might see it over the line.

On that reasoning, Kathryn Bigelow would have to be a very big shot for Best Director, even if Avatar did take Best Picture. Academy voters may not look as kindly on the massive* plethora of special effects etc of Avatar, and lean more toward a pure "directing" performance.

At first glance also, the $4.50 on George Clooney looks very good. Has received major plaudits for Up In The Air from the major areas, and is certainly the current "hype" actor in the category.

Meryl Streep's turn in "Julie & Julia" has also had rave reviews from the areas that count. Somehow just can't see Sandra Bullock taking out such a prestigous category against an Academy darling as Streep. Bullock has NEVER been nominated for any Academy Award. On the other hand, this is Streep's 16th nomination - three for Best Supporting Actress (one win) and 13 for Best Actress (one win).

Ive been on the Hurt Locker for several weeks now and you would think it's out of that and Avatar but Inglorious Basterds isn't bad value for a roughy (as is Tarentino for director, although I like Cameron in that one).

Jeff Bridges, whilst short, is a monty I reckon.

err no.avatar is not a lock, hurt locker has at least a 50/50 shot, bigalow won the dga and 15/20 times or something like that dga winner has gone on to win the oscar equivalent, and the director and motion picture awards "usually" go hand in hand at the oscars
