Obviously the main issue here is crowds at the races...

I am a massive horse racing fan BUT I also play cricket.
There is nothing I would enjoy more than to go to more race day meetings, in fact with footy and cricket I barely get to any in a year.
Why do we not have more Sunday and Friday Night meetings? I know if they were held on these days/nights I would attend 10+ throughout the year and spend my hard earned. I always watch Cantebury and MV night races and think wow, if that was in Adelaide tonight I would love to be there.

I'm assuming betting turnover, etc, etc are the reasons but Saturday's are really not suitable for alot of people.

they don't have friday night racing because they haven't got sufficient lights for it ;) , heck the lights they have for trackwork wouldn't light up an 'outhouse' ;)

Thought they did some of these meetings? Or are the twilight... well anyways get some lights! haha

Older members dont want this race day to go ahead

horse racing is dying

when these old ignorant members die, then so does the racing industry and then everyone will be happy

surely this isn't a 'moral thing' as imho it is a 'lifestyle/choice' decision, i really don't see why there is any problem, i don't want people telling me what i can or can not do & why should anyone else tell anyone (gay, lesbian, straight, transexual etc etc) what they can or can not do as long as PEOPLE are law obeying & respectful of others & it seems some are not respectful to others in this case
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

You idiot OL!!!

These sajc members are the same people who think someone in a pair of jeans is below them and of a lesser class that they feel a need to complain if they dare enter the members. It's a bloody joke and they should get over themselves!!! You can wear jeans in the members at flemington for gods sake!!!

Old members of any club still living in the era from 30 years ago just give me the shites... I am a saca member and there are some there too don't you worry...

Gone are the days of the traditional race meeting. Now it is a bunch of drunk yobo's in jeans, gay in some case  . What a shame that young people today have no tradition.

So what ideas have you come up with to help promote the sport and attract more spectators to the track.
If you don't like it, change it. If you don't want to change it, it can't be that bad!

So a young bloke (hetero only) in brown slacks and a cardy is your prefered target for the SAJC (I guess you want only men at the track as well)

No wonder this state is so far behind the rest of the country. Some people still set in there ways and wont accept change. The sooner people change the better this great state would be. I very much doubt any of the target crowd for saturdays meeting would enter the members area anyway so what is the big deal??

I agree MC, it's easy to slag but difficult to get bums out of seats and down to the track. here's a couple of my ideas.

Free entry (pardon the slight 'gay' reference there) or maybe a gold coin donation.
Free pint upon entry (soft drink or beer) upon proof of entry
Free $5 bet with a bookie upon proof of entry
Cheap(er) drinks
Cheap(er) and edible food
Every person who enters the track has a chance to win (insert something of value - Nintendo Wii, mountain bike, gym membership) but you have to be there to win.

OBVIOUS problem with this is that there are paid up members who will bark that they don't get these benefits, but geez we need to attract people back to the track.

Give the members a better deal then.

Do members area have cheaper drinks and food then in the ""óuter'"

How easy is it to go the pub on a satdee arvo

get a decent feed for about $10, get cheap drinks - generally there will be a happy hour

not really have to wrestle with the crowds to get a bet on

or

stay at home

food and drinks are just a short walk to the kitchen

logging onto your computer and you have the choice of betfair, any TAB in OZ, any corporate bookie most of which will offer a best fluc or top fluc option
watch races via the computer or through foxtel

perhaps the latter option is what the current members of the SAJC want

they dont want to introduce the sport to other people within the community

but - surely the club benefits with its rebate from unitab if there is more turnover on-course.

And if they do then you would think they are frequenting that area more often than just this weekends themed meet.

I comepletely and wholeheartedly agree MT. I'm one of those that would rather be at home, drink cheap beer, use Betfair and get better odds, flick channels to watch the cricket etc and have somethign decent to eat for under $15. The challenge for the SAJC and other entities, is how to get ME out of my chair and into their facilities spending my money on them and their venue.

I'm also living on the other side of town from our 'two' tracks. So what's to make me want to spend money on getting there, spend more money to get in, and then spending more money on drinks, racebook etc, etc, etc. Where is the incentive to go?

that is the real challenge GADJ, WHY do we need to be at the track, when arguably there is more benefit being at home.........

for race clubs of ALL 3 codes

to get people out of the house and onto a race track - investing through bookies or tote and buying food and drinks

the prices of food and drinks at the dogs and gallops is highway robbery. Havent been to the trots for a while but id suggest they are similar
