dv, what ol is saying is that aniMALs like apes, rhino's, whales & the like DO NEED our (human) help more so than a horse in a stable who gets fed, groomed, rugged, exercised, vet checks among other luxuries........dv i'd ask you to go to a racing stable (thoroughbred or harness) & see for YOURSELF how these horses are treated & then make a judgement

my partner has two thoroughbreds that she and her kids use for eventing and I am pretty much involved on their day to day care and upkeep. Does that count?

yes, which means you have an idea on how horses a looked after, however your talking about racing horses so i'd ask you to go to a racing stable & look for yourself, all it takes is a call to a local stable in your area (your choice which one) & see for yourself....or just go to morphettville in the morning from around 5am weekdays & look there while trackwork is in progress

great call bayman, yes that is the point I was trying to make, I think there are a lot more worries with other animals in the world than a well looked after horse who gets hit 10 times in a fortnight.

Oh give me a break you blokes. My beef is not with how horses are treated in stables. You are trying to deflect the issue and that has crept from whipping the bloody things to killing them when they break a leg after misjudging a jump at say, Oakbank. At which point in your life do you suddenly think "oh its fine to kill horses if they cant jump?

At which point in your life do you suddenly think it is ok to spray flies or sqaush a spider?

where will this end?

If it's kids it's more likely to be dressage or just trotting around in front of snooty ladies. Did I spell dressage right?
Anyway, DV made some valid points, as did the pro whippers.

Can see both arguments and the new whip rules are a compromise, it is interesting how you never see the jump protesters at the pony clubs, eventing or cross country

You reckon jumps racing in Aust is bad (only SA/Vic have it) havea look in the UK and France, they have 12 race meetings full of jumps races very regularly. Id say for ever one jumps race here there are 40 over there...

Just because they're doing it more doesn't make right though? I could go and enslave one Chinese person to work in my factory for minimum wage and then point at say "you should see how many people China are doing
it to." This thread isn't about jumping though. More so about the use of whips, which Australian research suggests it's pretty ineffectual. It's probably a bit morbid, but I love seeing a jockey whip a
horse home if it has my 10 bucks on it. That's pretty terrible but I'm just being honest.

So if we all put $5 on it we will double the win pool from $50 to $100 and it will pay $1.80

what would hurt more
using the whip or kicking with spurs?
no one condones excessive use of the whip it is used for encouragement more than
anything else,no proffesional jockey driver or stablehand would keep their jobs if they were continually flogging a tired animal.
