Drunken Sailor had a chequered Australian campaign last year, but won over 2400m two starts over the English Harris Tweed (not the NZ horse of the same name) at Goodwood, albeit in very slow time. Will have to be snagged back from the barrier, but if saved for one last dash, could be one to watch. Problem is, if it is a leader biased track like last week, that could harm his chances.

Mighty High's formline looks very strong for this, with a win and a third over 2400m in his last four starts in Hong Kong in good time. Retains Darren Beadman, who has ridden him at the last four starts, and looks a very solid chance.

Green Moon's win in the Newcastle Cup was very good, given he raced three and four wide for much of the 2300m journey, so should have no trouble at 2400m. Worth noting, though, that at his only run over the distance six starts back in England, was well beaten.

i like green moon each way. be more confident if had drawn a better alley. the australian way of racing might suit green moon better than the european style CK. more sit and sprint than flat out til last horse standing.

A lot of people raving about Lucas Cranach's run, which was excellent, but Unusual Suspect ran a slashing Cup trial, made impressive ground for 6th.

I think Tullamore's run was ideal for the Melb Cup. At $26, I'll be taking some of that money.

That's right but that's what the media in particular needs to understand that it's like if you were going to be running a horse in a 3200 metre race and Glen Boss was available. Obviously you'd go with Glen Boss, regardless of whether Stojakovic or Paul Gatt was the regular rider. At the end of the day Williams is one of the top 3 jockeys in Australia and IMHO McDonald shouldn't even have given the issue airtime as I feel it's disrepectful to the owners - their horse, they can put who they like on it - and Williams.

I had 20 bucks on Aus to beat NZ in the league, NZ to beat Aus in the Union and Tullamore to win the world cup at 28's. 20 @ 50's.... nice if it comes in.

Then:

20 on Aus (League)/Tullamore @ 29's
20 on Kiwis (Union)/Tullamore @ 30's
30 on Tullamore to win, 20 the place @ 28's and $7.75

hehehe, hoping he can flash down the wing and score a try! That's what happens when you are watching the world cup and typing about the Melbourne Cup. Der!

Thought Aus and NZ would be too good in their respective games. Bring on Nov 2!

On Sportsbet, I took their offer of picking the Caulfiield Cup/Melbourne Cup double. I'm alive in that after picking Southern Speed but took Lion Tamer as the Melb Cup winner, so here's hoping either get up*
