FORMER top riders Simon Marshall and John Letts say rules around jockeys' challenge betting should be tightened to avoid a repeat of the "price-plunge" scenario at Morphettville on Saturday.

Stewards yesterday requested information from six betting agencies as investigations continued into the circumstances around Paul Gatt being backed from $21 into $2.40 favouritism in Saturday's Adelaide jockeys' challenge.

Gatt replaced an ill Chad Lever on well-fancied Tropic Thunder and Outlandish Lad and many of the bets are believed to have been placed before the change of riders was officially notified.

Gatt eventually finished tied on points for first in the challenge with Claudia Lions, Amy Herrmann and Todd Pannell.

Marshall and Letts said jockeys' challenge betting was always susceptible to "inside information" and was a "buyer beware" scenario for wagering agencies.

But both said the rules could be tightened to provide a fairer punting environment.

"Betting agencies are left open to this type of thing but the integrity of the racing industry has to be protected," multiple Group 1-winner Marshall said.

"I'm sure it's just a case of having to tighten the rules up.

"In unusual circumstances like these - where the game is potentially going to be brought into disrepute - maybe it's just that punters need to be given a refund and the challenge deemed null and void."

Letts said it was unfortunate the reputation of Lever would be open to question while the inquiry continued.

He said betting agencies should prohibit betting on the jockeys' challenge until an hour before the first race.

"Chad Lever gets limited opportunities because of his weight and he's going for back-to-back premierships, which is something any jockey would want on their resume," Letts said.

"He had a couple of really good rides on Saturday and you're not going to give that up unless you really are ill.

"The best way to avoid this situation would be to not open the jockeys' challenge until an hour before the first race.

"That way if someone pulls out, the replacements should be known before the markets go up."

Another promiment racing insider - who did not want to be named - said the "all-in" nature of jockeys' challenge betting was patently unfair to punters.

"If jockeys pull out after the market has opened, like Chad Lever did, the people who have backed them do their money because it's all-in," the source said.

"It should be like a horse being scratched.

"So long as you've backed it after acceptances your bet is refunded."

It works both ways....
Punters get stung sometimes, and bookies get stung sometimes.

Stupid thing for Lettsy and Marshall to say.

What about if you backed Newitt today?

well, it would be fair to say that all the bookies will be looking at ways to make the JC's easier for them to manage and minimise liablility in light of this case

Arnold again, backed all his rides outright today rather than take the $3 on JC, so makes up for Symons disappointing effort.

i agree...

i think if they are real short on the JC ya better of lookin at their rides n backing ones u think are chance to score which are paying more than his JC odds if u know what i mean.
