Your AFL club

Over the years I’ve had a mild interest in what VFL, then AFL club people follow.

This seemingly became a bit more complicated when the Crows, then Port joined the AFL.

There are some who just went for the club that their fave SANFL player went to, others that followed the club because of their Dad/other, etc, etc.

So you’d initially think that a Port SANFL supporter would just support Port AFL, but there’s Port SANFL supporters who follow West Coast, Sydney, Richmond or even the Crows.

Makes sense if you followed one of those clubs before Port entered the AFL.

Similarly, there are Glenelg supporters who follow Port AFL, Carlton, Geelong, etc.

There’s probably a similar thread for why your SANFL club, but we’ll leave that for another day.

So, what’s your story?

Followed Mum, who was a mad Westies supporter, and followed the Bombers as a result (probably due to the same colours, not 100% sure on that one).

A bloke over the road was a mad Essendon supporter too, he had a block mounted poster of the 1983 team and I always thought it was cool. Plus, '84 and '85 certainly helped convince me

Whichever club has the most Glenelg Players on their books especially those I've been associated with

Go Lions ATM! However, could be trumped by Adelaide or Carlton next year

Thought Brad Close was very, very, very good last Thursday!

Can generally comment on most games given the amount of Bays players in the AFL

Have a soft spot for Carlton due to Tony Lynn being my favourite footballer as a teenager. Loved him when he was at Centrals so naturally like Carlton when he went there.

Have generally followed Centrals players when they go to AFL level so always had a soft spot for Hawthorn. Didn't mind North Melbourne either as i grew up with Stuey Cochrane and Eddie Sansbury. Then Alan Obst went there as well who was an opponent of mine in junior football.

Since moving away obviously not as connected or invested in Centrals but love to see the guys that go to AFL do well. The generation of players though that i grew up playing with or against or were mates with are now long gone so don't really know any of them these days.

When I was a very young child, I went for the Bays, because mum liked tigers... I never went to a game or anything as Dad wasn't into footy at all, due to his soccer playing and not having a clue what was going on.

Stephen Kernahan was the only player I knew so when he went to the Blues, they became my team.

When I was in Primary School my best mate and his dad took me to my first ever SANFL game to see the Dogs, and then took me to every home game after that for a year and that is how they became my SANFL team.

Didn't care until the cunning VFL decided to show live footy into SA. All of a sudden I had an interest. Liked the battlers initially which meant I favoured the Saints, Melbourne (red and Blue), Footscray and Geelong. The Roys also captured the imagination at times, especially in 1983. I decided on the Cats when I first saw Senior play. He was the best player I've ever seen and it felt good to know this bloke was on your team. When the Vics gutted the SANFL no way was I going to follow the Crows who just seemed like a glorified Glenelg **** that and Port Adelaide **** that as well. While it sucked watching Port and Crows winning flags reckon it's turned out fairly well these days. Go the Cats!

REB

Used to love watching the Swans as a kid when they played their home games on a Sunday, they were a bit poop but could surprise a team here or there, they had it all, The Swanettes, the old ducks that sat behind the goals right up front, Round, Browning, Bayes, Mitchell, Capper etc. They were everyone's 2nd favourite team.

I remember seeing Bruce Lindner kick a 70m goal for Geelong one day as they managed 8 goals in the last for a come from behind win.

No love for Dennis Carrol? He did a clinic at my school, was an insanely cool individual B-)

Mark Bayes was one of the best kicks I've ever seen, pure effortlessness

How could I forget the ole number 7, very honest performer.

Totally agree with Mark Bayes, the ultimate left footer.

A bit later on in life but the Richard Osborn head clash was very harrowing
