Fair point, and should be dealt with harshly and swiftly.. but are we going to continue suspending players for slurs? Name calling?

You're assuming it as a 'slur' and not 'vilification'.

Well no one knows except those directly involved do they. :-k

Look i'm not trying to justify name calling or vilification or abuse or anything like that.. i'm just trying to work out how it looks long term with these penalties and for what.

I think the AFL said slur not vilification.
That's probably another point (in addition to the quick apology vs being dragged to give one) that explains why Jeremy got 3 and Tex got 6.

Interestingly Chris Davies used the term "vilification" at his presser.
Anyway slur, vilification, its ultimately all the same anyway you take it

I don’t know if it’s right to compare slurs that are racist or homophobic so don’t shoot me down too harshly.

Whether the player is gay or isn’t gay would be irrelevant to a punishment hey??? Would be like calling someone by their skin colour on a footy field to describe them, whether that is factually their skin colour is completely irrelevant. If you are using the words to insult, or in a manner that is negative or disparaging than the factual element is irrelevant.

No???

Lines been drawn in the sand by the AFL and rightly so, its all quite simple

Keep you mouths shut, cause if you use racist comments or homophobic comments ya getting a fine and a holiday

Let alone the personal embarrasment to yourself, family and team mates

POOFTER?
FAGGOT?
GAY?

My understanding from what I’ve dissected is that he called a player a faggot, I don’t know what context or what it was in response to.

I could be wrong, it’s just what the detective side of me established.

Maybe he got touched on the pecker and reacted? I don’t know how homosexuals can be offended over something they didn’t hear or don’t know what was said, it is between the players involved, it appears as though he has to apologise to the whole gay community.

Regardless of the punishment, the AFL has now set a precedent and any player now must face the same consequence if they let a homophobic slur slip, it is what it is a Jeremy has to live with it for the rest of his life, it’s what everyone will remember him for in 10 years time.

Clarkson getting away with it and Finlayson getting suspended makes you think........is there degrees when it comes to racist/homophobic comments?

Whether you direct it at someone who is gay vs someone who isnt?
Whether you use the word Clarkson used versus the word gay?

Their probably isnt...... is there?

There*

That’s the question that rings in my head!

Is it offensive if the victim isn’t?

Has the player said he was?

I haven’t asked him yet, I’m waiting for the transcript to be released.

Absolutely, I think we’re all a lot more mindful nowadays as it is far more socially accepted, we all probably have more gay friends now then what we did years ago as “coming out” is now far more common and not seen as reason to be ostracised.

I couldn’t be gay as waxing would be too dear for me and I’d get my chest hairs tangled with my partner.

It's all about the intent to cause harm (mental disintegration as tugga called it)
Can't do it anymore.

Well they have now, they sort of didn't with Clarko but they have rectified this now.

Agree however I would be surprised if anyone here has said it in the last 15 years.

Lets not forget footballers live in a different world, absolutely no excuse, but they are miles from a "normal" upbringing.

I would suggest he will get off lighter than Tex as he put his hand up straight away.

Not to mention shirt-lifters and pillow-biters from a certain coach of ours.

So if I insult you, I should be suspended and put on display for the world to see?
