During the final years of his 16-season playing career Gray expressed an interest in recruiting and list management, keeping an eye on the best young talent and spending time with National Recruiting Manager Geoff Parker and List Manager Jason Cripps.

The thee-time club best and fairest and four-time All-Australian’s new role will involve tracking the best in South Australian talent, as well as young players across the nation.

“Our List Management and Recruiting team, led by Jason Cripps, are an experienced and talented group and we look forward to Rob’s continuing contribution to the team,” said General Manager – Football, Chris Davies about Gray’s appointment.

“Rob has an eye for talent, sees the game better than most and knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level. I have no doubt he’ll be great at this too.”

Gray retired at the end of the 2022 season after 271 games and 367 goals.

He said it felt like a natural transition into recruiting.

“I’ve always been interested in recruiting and list management so I’m really grateful to get the opportunity to move into that space,” Gray said.

“I’m excited about having the chance to work with Jason, Geoff and the team to help add to the exciting talent we already have at the club.”

Gray has already started in the role, taking in the 2022 NAB AFL Draft Combine in Melbourne earlier this month.

The worst possible start with the Saints going forward and goaling inside the first minute. Saints controlled the first term however a bit of class from Ewings and a demelo snap saw us close enough at quarter time.

Saints had more of the footy in the second term as well, however Ballard down back was at her defensive best that we’ve seen all season, holding the saints well and ensuring they couldn’t build a lead. With 5 minutes to go Spud Surman pounced on a crumb and converted to pull us back to level. A centre clearance saw Johnson run into open goal and then another win in the middle put the ball inside our forward 50 once again. Houghton the benefactor this time as she marked and goaled to give Port 3 in 3 minutes and we went to the major break with a 12 point lead, 5.1 to the saints 2.7.

The saints started the second half the way they started the first, taking control and goaling early. In fact they had all the play and kicked 2.4 to 0.0. Not much to write about, a qtr we want to forget. 4 points down at the final break.

The final term was an arm wrestle and half way through we had our best opportunity, demelo straight in front 20 out, however as the kick drifted wide, we remained behind on the scoreboard. Houghton had a set shot late on a bit of an angle that was adjudged to have clipped the post on the way through, and that was the only other score of the term.

So another narrow loss in another goalless second half. One game to go then an opportunity for our young squad to get a preseason into their legs, as well as the chance to build a connection as a team and develop their game plan, as well as how they want to play in different scenarios.

Pretty sure that every player in our squad has now played a game this season.

Highlights -

Without doubt Hannah Ewings, going to be a star of the competition as her clearance work is elite, her ball use on both sides of the body top shelf and doesn't shirk a contest. She might be one of the best in the game in the next 2 years.

Maria Moloney has established herself alongside Ewings in the midfield and they both have similar attributes. Strong at the contest, fast with ball from hand to foot in traffic, has become an important part of the midfield.

Alex Ballard has taken to AFLW like few others in her first season, excellent overhead, good in the aerial defensive role and uses the ball with a calm certainty. At just 19 she's a long term key defender for Port.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about, if North wanted to get rid of him after just one year, why did they recruit him?

Xav Wagner
@SauceWagner_23

You can just see it next year, Port v Norf, Zurhaar nails JHF holding the ball in a monster tackle, goes back and slots a massive goal right on the final siren to reduce the margin to under 10 goals. The crowd of 8,000 at marvel stadium go wild.

Yes, every player has gotten at least 1 game.

Agreed, interested in doing a full review of the squad after next game, with that said, a bit hard to know what list changes need to be made when its unclear who already has a deal for next season, and also what changes will be made to squad sizes, number of games, etc. Not to mention which players decide to move on themselves, either to other jobs outside of footy, get pregnant, or move clubs.

Agree on Ewings and Ballard.
I'm not sold on Moloney yet. Clearly she's in our current best 18 and will be again next season, but I'm not convinced she's a long term option. She's slow and plods from contest to contest. As more kids come through the system over the next 3 years I expect Maria will be pushed out reasonably quickly. With that said, if they move on Yorston for the same reasons and Dowrick spends more time forward, then Maria's lack of pace can be covered more easily.
