Mid-Season Trading 2017?

Apologies, couldn't find previous topic. Looks like it could be in place next year - Gillon sounds pretty keen on it to me.

A MID-SEASON trade period could be a reality as early as next season, AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan has revealed.

Key AFL officials and club list managers have been involved in a brainstorming session around the way club lists are shaped in the future.

Mid-season trading has been on the agenda in those talks and McLachlan said he believed it could be a workable solution for clubs whose prospects have otherwise been hurt by injuries.

"I think it’s got some merit," McLachlan told Fox Footy on Thursday.

“It’s real enough that the discussion is happening with the clubs.

“If it happened it would probably come in next year."

McLachlan said the way fans feel about mid-season trading would play a big part in whether the move proceeded.

“I think the cultural thing is a big thing to consider," he said.

“It’s really not any different to being traded at the end of the year, but in-season probably feels different and I think that cultural aspect is something that everyone is thinking about."

Other list management mechanisms discussed at the brainstorming session included short-term contracts, list sizes, free agency and compensation, trading players during the NAB AFL Draft and the need for a pre-season draft.

The AFL gathering, reported in The Australian on Thursday, was designed to facilitate discussion and hear club views on issues that have been raised over player movement and acquisition rather than to form immediate recommendations.

Participants were asked to consider some of the questions and put forward their ideas and potential consequences of changes.

AFL football operations boss Mark Evans told AFL.com.au the meeting was designed to consider how the game might look in five or 10 years time.

"The idea behind it was to bring people from within the AFL and from clubs together just to explore a whole range of things that could potentially assist clubs, the League and players in formulating a future draft, trading and free agency system," Evans said.

The AFL last had a mid-season draft in 1993 but it was a major talking point when AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan met with club coaches in 2014.

There are about 220 players on AFL lists this season yet to play a game for their clubs, with experienced players such as Melbourne's Jack Grimes, North Melbourne's Aaron Black and Lachie Hansen, St Kilda's Billy Longer and Western Bulldog Will Minson unable to break into their senior sides despite being available for selection.

The Sydney Swans could be one club interested in trading in a ruckman if a mid-season trade was to be held this season after Kurt Tippett was injured, while Collingwood's Travis Cloke would be an obvious candidate for a club in contention such as Hawthorn who might like a big key forward.

The AFL had already flagged the possibility of introducing a system where clubs offered short-term contracts for players from state leagues after Essendon was forced to do that when 12 of its players received season-long bans in January.

Free agency has been a major talking point, although few players have changed clubs under the system introduced in 2012 despite their eligibility.

The AFLPA is hoping to change the eligibility criteria to make it easier for players to qualify as free agents during this year's collective bargaining agreement.

Adelaide's recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie told AFL.com.au's Road to the Draft podcast on Tuesday he had considered question of whether players could be traded on draft night.

He said the exchange of draft selections might be more practical with the Crows and Geelong exchanging picks in 2014, which allowed the Cats to get Nakia Cockatoo and the Crows to choose intended target Jake Lever and have an earlier pick in a later round.

"I struggle to get my head around how you would trade players on the night because of medicals and talking to the player and the club you are going to trade him to. That would be difficult," Ogilvie said.

"At this stage, without having spent a lot of time as a group working on it, I think it can only be picks. Whether we have enough picks in our game to make it a viable, exciting thing for TV I'm not sure. "

Giants veteran Steve Johnson is not a fan of the idea.

Not sure how it would work. Possibly listing a Vfl or sanfl player for a short term contract Could potentially work. But I doubt mid season trading will get much traction

Terrible thinking. Not sure why anyone would think it would be useful to arrange a trade to benefit the player and both clubs.

There is great fear in your urge to press caps lock then i sense young jedi

Such change being publically discussed by our highest football leaders must hav beneficial consequences for many parties involved in the afl as if it didnt the CEO of our great game would simply laugh it off

Simpletons like us who are nobodies in our own lounge rooms jump off our recliner screaming NO NO NO DONT DO IT!!!!! And who the hell are we with our severe ignorance to the above benefits to turn beneficial change away without even considering why it could be great for certain parties

There are people in administration offices spending 40 hours a week on such a proposal and you spend 2 minutes reading some article and you claim to know whats best for players on the outer or struggling clubs who could use a little boost.

Lets just bark NO cos its a chance to be heard or its a chance for any of us to whinge about something in our severely boring days

Id love to see ellis yolmen be given an immediate chance of playing afl next week cos hes got f##k all chance of getting games under don pyke it seems.

I can see merit in perhaps drafting in a player mid season.

The trade idea seems rather complex in the way it would work. Trades just dont happen all of a sudden there is lots of talks that happen well before the standard trade week. So really players and agents and clubs will be doing a full circle of talks all season really.

Look if your a top 4 or even top 8 side and say you lose a key defender. Then you look at ome of the bottom clubs to do a deal and get one in. Obviously that opens up the cap spave for the bottom side but so they have to trade a player? Could it potentially be a pick not yet received? Complex but if it is an idea that has merit lets see some details.

No, just no.

Let's say Port approached North for Daw, why would they say yes, what is the compensation?

Perhaps a future pick, but only if we keep Daw. You wouldn't give up a future pick to have someone for 10 weeks.

Is it monetary? If so, nobody will agree to giving up the flexibility in their squad for some coin, not even the broke clubs.

North would then be a player short on their list, can they upgrade a rookie?

Yet again it shows the AFL are NOT the custodians for the game in general (ie, outside of their own competition) if this goes through. Not that any further proof was needed.

Indeed, players will be "taken" ( think 60 Minutes style ) from the state leagues.

Again, the compensation issue arises.

Why would a club trade a player mid season who knows all their game plans and inside club info to strengthen an opposition team who may in turn knock them out of finals?

Yep this is a fair point.

Even though someone like Daw would be hot property for clubs like Port or the Swans I cant see North parting with him for almost anything.

Has to be lower league players really. Even though that creates its own issues

Intellectual property at that level would be pretty slim, the amount of work opposition scouts put into opposing clubs pretty much ensures there are no secrets. There might be the odd set play from a kick in that a scout hasn't seen or picked up, but structures at ball ups, kick ins, defensively, they're all there for people to see. That wouldn't be the issue, IMO, what though, using Daw as an example, if Goldstein goes down, then what? They take him back?

AFL club > AFL club midseason trading does, can't and will not work.

AFL club poaching from state leagues might happen, shouldn't, but might.

Imagine someone approaching the Bays with $50,000 to take someone for 10 weeks?

it would be hugely complicated and trades would barely happen

but having this window mid year would change the dynamics totally, clubs and players would know this window would be open mid year and much much more planning would be kept in mind "all year round" instead of just and end of year thing

these are multi million dollar businesses, and they only get 1 week a year plus 2 draft days tro recruit employees... wtf???

imagine if your amateur club was only permitted these same recruiting periods to draw new players

things would get a bit fudged up

remove these high constrictions just a little bit, they should be allowed to hire/trade staff mid year too
