I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm just itching to see an AFL coach, player, president, CEO, anyone in fact give these little media hounds a blast when they run up and jam a microphone in a someones face.

While James Hird is hardly on my list of most admired people, I thought the treatment he got when getting into his car in the morning was a little over the top. Now almost daily we see some "on the spot" reporter finding an injured player in a car park, getting in the face of a bloke who is yet to sign on as he arrives at training, almost anywhere they can get a "grab" they go for it.

Now, I think all clubs give amazing access to fans and media in their clubrooms. All clubs give amazing access to retirement speeches, pre match warm up, after match cool downs, I think the media industry as a whole needs to back off from the way they try and catch players, coaches and admin off guard to give them a sensational headline to run with.

Back off guys, we've got plenty of news (half of it not news!) to absorb, we don't need half arsed comments turned into something they are not.

I know Hird doesnt have many friends out there but I find it pretty poor to have media people camped outside his house awaiting his every move. At one stage they were there 24hrs a day. He seemed to handle it ok until the day he went to pick up his kids for school and some journos were waiting outside the school. Reckon it would take a fair bit of effort not to rip their heads off

Yeah at the school is crossing the line in my opinion.

This sort of procedure is why I'm very happy to potter along in the role I have.
I feel like I'd be compromising myself by doing that stuff.
I understand why the journos do it, but it's just not my scene.

This was prompted by an excellent performance by Isaac Smith at Hawthorn training yesterday. Every question was listened to, was answered in perfect politician speak, ie didn't answer it at all and treated the little microphone wielding chap with no respect at all. Nearly shut the car door on him!

While I know it's their job, it's not the one I'd be telling the chief football writer I'm happy to do, as DW so well notes above.

I think it is a symptom of the media as a whole nowadays, not limited to just the AFL media.

24hr news cycles and social media means that there has to be current updates, rather than considered articles at longer timescales.

If you follow fox sports news on facebook you will know what i mean. Ridiculous clickbait headlines, which destroy any integrity the articles have (which is rare anyway)

By comparison the AFL media do a half decent job.

When the media pay $2.5bn for TV and media rights, what do you expect? Get used to it and enjoy your big paychecks.
