Greatest Football Dynasty

Just thinking about how good Geelong have been since 2007 with their sustained dominance, made me wonder, what is the greatest footy dynasty of sustained success?
Brisbane won 3 in a row early 2000's
Hawthorn through the 80's and 90's were regular finals contenders and premiers
Richmond had a golden era in the 70's
Collingwood 4 flags in the 20's unlikely to ever be matched again
Melbourne made 7 GF's through the 50's
Hawthorn could stake their claims over the past 6 years as well though..

Would swans be in the mix??? missed one final series since 2002.... 2 premierships and 3 GF's...
I'm probably clutching at straws but we'd have to in the top 4 for the past decade...

Whoops sorry missed the Swans! Absolutely, especially looking at their squad and good chance to add to their GF appearances

Only because I dont know enough about the collingwood dynasty or the Melbourne dynasty (stats alone would say that is impressive), but Hawthorns 80's and early 90's for mine. From 83-91 that was about as impressive as it gets for the "modern" era.

pretty simple Brisbane the only team to win 3 AFL premierships in a row

No Geelong? 07/09/11 flags with a GF loss and prelim loss in there?

No to the Swans. No to the current Hawks. Not even close - Collingwood has won more games than both those sides during the era you're discussing for those teams. Also, you can't have three dynasties on one era - Sydney, Hawthorn, Geelong.
Neither comes close to Geelong of the current era, nor the Hawthorn of the 70s/80s/90s.
Not winning consecutive flags dents the Geelong claims, for mine.
Brisbane, as good as they were and as brilliant, will always have their concessions hanging over their claims.
I think Melbourne and Hawthorn have the greatest claims, only because my bias precludes me from picking Collingwood (and, I know I'll be fighting a losing argument in picking Collingwood, anyway, because no-one else will want to give the Pies anything).

For the record, though, between 1919 and 1930, Collingwood only missed the GF in 21, 23, 24. Winning 1919 and then 27 to 30.

Solely taking GFs won and played in I'd go with:
Hawthorn 83-91
Melbourne 54-60
Collingwood 25-30
Essendon 41-51
Fitzroy 1898-1906
Richmond 67-74
If I took into account size of the comp, games won and the effect current day rules have on equalising the comp it'd be a much different list but much more open for argument.

1927 to 1930 is four consecutive flags, isn't it?

For me Port Power of the 50's is up there (see what i did there huh huh

)
Haha.. na all seriousness, i think Hawthorn for me in the 80's & 90's.. made something like 14 straight finals series? Won flags regularly including night flags, that is truly a sustained period of success

To be honest, that's another reason to knock the 20s Pies claims on the head.

I remember hearing a stat that the current geelong "dynasty" has the greatest winning percentage of any side in history. That's pretty impressive. If they hadn't been stunned by that hawthorn gf loss I think it would be almost a certainty.
I wouldn't say geelong have completely dominated though. Not as if they have been top every year or had undefeated seasons etc. but to be around the mark for so long had been incredibly.

You just can't read. And you don't know your history.

Way too many variables to make a definitive case for any club really.
Although, if I had to select one, I'd go with Hawthorn.

In my time following footy, late 70’s on:
1. Hawthorn 1983-1991 for sustained dominance
2. Brisbane 2001-2004 - 3 flags and a further GF appearance whilst having to get on a plane every second week. Massive achievement.
3. West Coast Eagles 1990 -1994 – Travelled the breadth of the country and could beat teams anywhere including suburban fortresses like Moorabbin, Victoria Park, Windy Hill, and Western Oval.
