Cap on interchange rotations for 2014 and 2015 seasons

The AFL has announced that the Commission has set a cap of 120 rotations per match, plus any changes made at quarter breaks and the use of the substitute.

Apparently there have been around 131 interchange rotations per game in 2013.

A maximum of 10 per quarter would make sense to me. ;)

I can't understand the AFL. They were hell bent on increasing the speed of the game for a decade or more, now via the Sub rule (which I actually dont mind) and capping the rotations, they are trying to slow it down.

if a guy is taken off injured or stretchered off does that use up a interchange?

if u use all 120 by 3 qtr time make sure you are not starting on the bench in the 4th

The game has changed rules constantly since it started, hasn't had a negative impact at all IMHO.

If a guy is stretchered off then you would likely use your Sub anyway, which as was mentioned wont change.

I highly doubt ANY club would be as stupid as to use all 120 by 3/4 time, i would imagine if 120 is the max for the game, clubs would look to utilise between 35-40 rotations per quarter and look to keep some up their sleeve for the last.

It will also require coaches to use a bit of strategic thinking around rotations close to the end of a quarter considering changes at the break dont count. You may see the quality players rested in the last few minutes of each quarter only.

120 will be eventually be whittled down to 80 over next few years I imagine.

Out of curiousity, how many rotations would the average league side make per game or a division 1 club? I know it isn't on the same level as AFL, just curious..

Is capped interchanges really that devastating? Are fans really that gutted if fewer rotations are made? Dont you want to see the best players out there for the longest time?

Maybe capped rotations will stop those stupid running to the bench after each goals interchanges!

I don't think it will reduce people's enjoyment of the game in the slightest, so in that respect it will be no different to how it is currently = why do it?

I know our D-grade coaches aim to make 15 rotations a qtr (7 man bench).

No doubt that answer doesn't help at all! :D

They have to keep changing the rules because coaches keep finding ways to manipulate them.
Also have to justify having a rules committee.
