AFL is considering putting player names on jumpers

PUTTING NAMES on the backs of players' jumpers is closer to becoming reality with the AFL admitting there is a push within the competition for it to happen.

The idea, common in professional sport, was raised seriously for the first time for a number of years in recent meetings involving AFL officials and there was significant support for the idea.

Many believe the recent introduction of two new teams into the competition has made the change necessary.

I don't mind putting names on the guernseys, as long it isn't done in a obtrusive way

Don't see how it can possibly be unobtrusive...

I can see why the AFL would want it for the merchandise opportunities but one thing I've always appreciated with footy is it's all about the team/jumper and not about the individual which happens so much in other sports say in the US like basketball.

Can the umpires have their names on their shirts, just so I know who I'm hurling abuse at. :)

Love the idea, North Adelaide have done it at least once in he last few years and it looked great. Would love it in the SANFL as it would be one less place to put a frigging advert. Be nice knowing who players are on TV and marketing wise its a no brainer.
Would also love sleeves like soccer and rugby and international rules but that's probably pushing it.

I'd prefer it to the advertising which is already on the jersey.

I called for this 20 years ago.

I also said that coaches would be called "Managers" at the same time. That's still to happen.

Not at all, sleeveless tops are tacky and can't be worn casually like most other sporting tops. There's no reason for it.

Hawthorn wore some in a pre season game and changed them at half time because they were restrictive for overhead marking. Wont happen.
