Matt Burgan who previously did a Phantom Draft each year, I believe is now employed by an AFL club. The AFL website has a top 30 Phantom Draft by someone called Callum Twomey.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/ ... fault.aspx

He has Whitfield at pick 1 to GWS.

Port at pick 7 taking Mayes from North Adelaide - (and Colquhoun from Centrals at pick 30).

At pick 20, he has 191cm Mason Wood from the Geelong Falcons going to Adelaide.

Interestingly this Phantom Draft has Grundy sliding to pick 14/GWS. Also, has local Troy Menzel going to WB at pick 6.

Only guessing, this is how I reckon it might fall.
Wines to Port and Mayes to Richmond would be huge wins.

1. GWS - Whitfield
2. GWS - O'Rourke
3. GWS - Plowman
4. Melb - Toumpas
5. WB - Menzel
6. WB - MacRae
7. Port - Wines
8. BL - Jacksch
9. Rich - Mayes
10. Ess - Daniher
11. Carl - Stringer
12. GWS - Grundy
13. GC - Simpson
14. GWS - Vlastuin

The top 3 are a given- its a matter of which order. Toumpas will go to melbourne with pick 4.

Wines will go to the dogs at 5 (no idea who they will pick with 6- possibly menzel)

Mayes to port with 7 (although id like to see us pick grundy)

If grundy slips to 9 Richmond will be all over him (id be extremely surprised if the phantom drafts prediciton that he would be still available at pick 14).

I'm just not sure about Grundy - I'm worried he could be another Sellar.

I think Mayes is probably the best option for Port. Perhaps Toumpas, but his existing injury worries me a little.

Grundy>Sellar every day of the week. I like him as I can see him POTENTIALLY filling that role of a Roughead (similar to what Lade used to do Circa 2004).

Toumpas wouldnt last to #7, although im not sure there is anything to be concerned about with his hips.

Personally i think Mayes is alberton bound.

Apparently the Dogs aren't keen on Wines, so he could potentially drop to Port.
The Dogs might even pick up Mayes instead of MacCrae.

Yeah i think if port had the choice between Mayes and Wines we would go Mayes.

I do believe though that if the dogs take Mayes and we are left with Wines and Grundy, Wines is a chance to land at Brisbane with the challenge of having to find a midfielder post Simon Black.

Yeah I guess the issue is that Sellar was very highly rated pre draft, but went on to become very average - so whilst most young players improve at a fairly quick rate, he went backwards.

Its that possible lack of progress with Grundy I'm a little worried about despite how highly he seems to be regarded.

I have to admit I haven't watched any youtube footage of Grundy - but his Sporting Pulse statistics - in terms of amount of times named in Best Players, and goals kicked - isn't that great. Admittedly, he is still a kid, and will physically develop in the next few years.

Totally agree re Grundy v Sellar. As a ruckman, Grundy at 18 202cm 100kg is already a better player than Sellar at 23 196cm 95kg. Sellar was only ever going to be a tall forward or tall defender - not good enough to play these roles and not big enough to ruck. Grundy with huge upside - still learning.

Yeah fair point, although Sellar at 17, is also better than Sellar at 23.

Maybe Jamar is a better example - Jamar has been a quality ruckman in last few years, but was only very average for 5 or 6 years. I would hope we wouldn't have to wait 5 or 6 years to see AFL standard football from him. Cameron Wood another early pick, hasn't improved over time.

Dare I mention John Meesen who was highly rated, and an early pick for the Crows - but turned out being a dud.

I think its increasingly unlikely port will go with Grundy anyway GWW. Its a 2 horse race it seems between Mayes and Wines.

Also noted this and thought id do some research- check out Whitfield's stats this season, in the best once, yet he will go #1. Does that reflect the depth of the draft pool or the fact recruiters only rate your performance in the championships?

With the Bulldogs having pick 6 in this year's draft, my brother read something I found quite amazing- No number 6 draft pick has played 200+ games, never played in a premiership and have never won a best and fairest.

Then we looked up the number six draft picks since 2000. They were Dylan Smith (2000), Ashley Sampi (2001), Steven Smith (2002), Kepler Bradley (2003), Tom Williams (2004), Beau Dowler (2005), Mitch Thorp (2006), David Myers (2007), Chris Yarren (2008), Gary Rohan (2009), Josh Caddy (2010) and Chad Wingard (2011).

It's still early days for Rohan, Caddy and Wingard while Chris Yarren has become one of Carlton's better player but from 2000-2007 there aren't any players there that have made their mark at AFL level, expect for Bradley and Sampi though they aren't/weren't stars of the game considering they are/were a top ten draft pick.

I saw that stat too, interesting.

Rohan would've bucked that trend and played in a flag this year had it not been for his injury.
