PAFC - 2012/2013 off season - training, drafts etc..

Postby GWW » Mon Nov 12, 2012 1:11 pm

Apart from the tragic death of John McCarthy, it has been a relatively good off season for us, with the appointment of Hinkley; rejuvenation of our lists (Hombsch, Neade, Stevenson, Heath..with Chaplin and Pearce moving on, and some other delistings); a trip to Europe including the exhibition game against the Bulldogs in London a week ago.

There are now some training photos from today on the official website..

Ben Jacobs has decided to enter the draft.

I don't know about anyone else but i love the drafting of Ollie Wines.
It would have been easy to just draft a SA boy to save on the "go home factor" but I think the Western Bulldogs F*%#$@ up big time no taking him. He is a solid 18 year old and will only build on his frame in time. A great replacement for the skipper who is nearing retirement.
Clurey should be a handy key back in a few years.
Shaw will hopefully be cherry ripe when Schulz is ready to hang up the boots with a few games under his belt.

I'm always excited this time of year and especially so after the last couple of seasons we have had.
I hope we can turn it around this year and if not make the 8 get very close. :D

I like your optimism mate. Apart from the tragic passing of John McCarthy (RIP) - and the hiccup with Jacobs - it has been a great off season, and our recruiters have done well to turn over our list. That turn over should have been done 3 or 4 years ago, but at least its been done now, and I think they've done as well as we could have hoped.

Re the PSD next Tuesday, I think we'll probably take Colquhoun, then maybe Raikiwasa and Jurrah in rookie draft.

Offer made to him apparently (must assume that the dogs are committed to prismal).

I would like to see us pick up a couple of local lads. Sam will spend a couple of years refining his game at centrals (accountability was a big issue for him my sources tell me) and putting on some size.

Jurrah is a huge risk that could potentially pay huge dividend. Im still not sure we should go down that path with his impending court case.

Jurrah - I would not go with at all.

Schulz, Butcher, Gray,Wingard, Ebert, Westhoff, Monfries, Hitchcock (?), D&P.Stewart and resting Boak,Ebert,Hartlett. We dont need a forward with that much baggage.

Apart from Gray, there is nobody in that lot IMO that has the X factor, the ability to pull something out of nowhere. Jurrah has that and the part of me that says yes would be the fact that he would only be rookie listed. Sits on the list playing SANFL and the court case lands him in jail for a while.....big whoop.....we de-list him at seasons end and move on. If he gets aquitted, then he can press for a spot on the senior list, press for senior selection and see what he can bring.

Yes- we run the risk of relapse.....thats the thing that puts me off......will his tribal issues stand up over all else?

Port have confirmed that they will not be selecting Jurrah in tomorrows pre-season draft, instead confirming they will look to recruit him through the port magpies in the SANFL and re-assess come the recruiting drive of the 2014 season.

Jurrah will also be given the opportunity to work with Power Community Ltd, the community development arm of the port adelaide football club, during the 2013 season.

Thought id follow suit from the blackbirds board and have a crack at our side come round 1. This is my opinion only (usually far from accurate!), feel free to post your changes.

B. 42. Tom Jonas, 27. Alipate Carlisle, 36. Jack Hombsch
HB. 1. Dom Cassisi, 12. Jackson Trengove, 8. Hamish Hartlett
C. 18. Kane Cornes, 10. Travis Boak, 40. Aaron Young
HF. 6. Angus Monfries, 43. Daniel Stewart, 20. Chad Wingard
F. 39. Justin Westhoff, 28. Jay Schultz, 14. Paul Stewart
R. 23. Matthew Lobbe, 7. Brad Ebert, 5. Matthew Broadbent

I/C. 16. Ollie Wines, 44. Tom Logan, 21. Matt Thomas, 29. Jasper Pittard
Emerg: 34. Jarrad Redden, 33. Brett Ebert, 26. Andrew Moore

Granted that Robbie Gray and John Butcher wont play early season football there is 2 players that can still come into our first 22.

Ill reserve judgement on the likes of Heath, Stevenson, Neade, Shaw until i see them in the NAB rounds, a few of them could force their way into the round 1 side.

I like your side, for the most part, but I think we lack someone down back that can take a quick small forward ? I'd like a fit Jasper in my starting 18. D.stewart worries me at CHF, gets dominated too easily too often. I'd swap him with Westy in the pocket. Make or break year for him. Is Butcher a late starter?

Yeah i thought Tom Jonas did ok in the latter part of the season on the small forwards. I included both Jasper and Logan on the bench for that exact reason, incase we are too tall down back.

Dan Stewart will start round 1 at CHF whilst Butcher recovers from his hip operation. I suspect once Butcher is fit he will slot straight into that CHF role.

Westy for mine is too small to play CHF, both height and body size. Stewy at least forces a contest, Westhoff plays that 3rd tall role very effectively (when we had tredders and lade down there circa 2007 he was very good up until the GF).

CHF is a significant problem - I'm not sure if D Stewart is the answer. Have heard he recently had surgery so perhaps that may have rectified a problem he had with injury last year that was hindering him.

We may have to rotate Schulz, Westhoff and Butcher (when fit enough to resume) between CHF and FF, and the bench. I also wouldn't mind someone like Hombsch given a chance in the NAB Cup to show what he can do in attack.

I also think we need a crumber deep in attack - so one of Wingard, Monfries or Young in the forward pocket.

P Stewart I think is better suited on a forward (or back) flank.

On the wings I'd like to see 2 of Wingard, Young, Monfries (I've heard he may want to play up the ground a bit), Hartlett and Boak.

I think if Redden is fit, he'll lead the ruck, perhaps with Renouf on the bench.

Agreed GWW, and it will be a while before our woes are eliminated at CHF too...

Paul Stewart will spend more time up forward this year, he kicked 20 goals in the back half of 2012 playing that small forward role. He could swap with wither monfries or wingard to a half forward role.

Redden has some work ahead of him in terms of increasing his aerobic capacity before Lobbe is shifted from #1 ruck.

Agreed about Redden, his fitness is an issue.

I think though that if Renouf and Lobbe are both fit, Renouf is likely to be given the opportunity to lead the ruck. In saying that, recent photos of Lobbe's bulk up frame give a bit of hope that he may be able to take the next step this season.

Im not one for precise knowledge of the inner sactum of port adelaides strength and conditioning department, but i can bet my bottom dollar that port adelaides players wouldnt have been GPS tracked over the christmas period (to the extent they were monitored for the km's they had run over the break and even where they had run them) all that often!!!

Fantastic initiative from Darren Burgess, its great to see our players returning to training in good shape. Hopefully this works towards eliminating our last quarter fadeouts which happened a few times in the early part of last season, and left us very much behind the 8 ball when tackling the top 4 sides.
