Newman v Demetriou

Postby Frosty » Fri Aug 24, 2012 10:40 am

Anyone watch The Footy Show on channel 9 last night and think Sam let the CEO off easy with the questions he asked him?

It was built up a lot and I was expecting Sam to go in a bit harder than he did, especially with issues like the umpires, MRP, holding the ball decisions and the like.

Bit disappointed it turned into a bit of a love in and Sam was obviously to scared to ask the hard hitting stuff.

How much, if any control would the AFL have over a channel 9 Footy Show production considering all the media deals they have are with channel 7/FOX and the censorship of the questions Sam would have been able/allowed to ask?

I didn't watch it as I knew that the hard questions would not be asked.
I am not sure about the control they have over a channel 9 football show, but I think the AFL have a strong say in there other commitments, for example they all work for Triple M who rely on the AFL broadcasting deal.
Sadly the AFL are very swift to step in & punish journo's that do ask the hard questions about the current state of the game. (Which is generally good, with some small glaring exceptions)

It was a weak effort from Sam. Very disappointing.

The best part of the show was when they asked various players the first word that comes to mind about Demetriou. I can't remember who but someone said dictator! Most others said they'd rather not comment.

Why is it generally good milky? Its crap they can censor/stop journos asking anything remotely inflammatory.

In general, Sam was asking the right questions, it's just that he let Dimwitriou get away with not answering them.

I'm now thinking they should do a round 2 with footy fans sending in the questions they want answered and Newman or whoever can ask them - maybe Damian Barrett would do a better job.

In addition, footage should be shown of contentious issues where the same sequence of play has occurred with two different decisions being given and an explanation demanded - especially the holding the ball and deliberate out of bounds rules.

And finally, I firmly believe the AFL should adopt the 360 degree feedback mechanism that so many workplaces have these days and use to great effect when providing feedback either up or down the hierarchy. By removing the ability for coaches or football departments within clubs to have an opinion on something they don't agree with and speak about it in a public forum is an elitist move that shows the AFL doesn't have the capacity to admit when it's wrong and take valid criticism on board. Until this happens they will go on defending their inconsistent practices because no one can bring them to order for the decisions that are made, particularly by the umpiring fraternity and the MRP.

Damian Barratt is a total flog, he wouldnt ask a tough question if his lift dependent on it. Fairly sure he is paid by the AFL, so no chance of the tough questions.

There is only one man that would ask the tough questions, that is Grant Thomas.

Big surprise. The only people Newman really gets stuck into are the intellectually disabled he finds on Street Talk. The man is a tosser of the highest order.

He's the only reason I usually watch Footy Classified.

Newman bleats on about his intellect but knew deep down that Andy had him covered and wouldn't have been willing to be made the fool by someone.

Barrett is one of the better footy journos in the know. However, he is employed by the AFL on its website, making it hard for him to criticise his "boss".

Sam definitely got beat up by a media savvy Demetriou, he didn't stick to his guns or his facts when Demetriou quizzed him but Sam isn't a journo, he's not bad at monologues and rants, his vocabulary is strong but when it comes to grilling one on one, you'd give it to someone with a bit more nous and/or ticker.

It's as though he was reading the questions from a script prepared by someone else because that wasn't Newman at all.

His questions would have been veted before hand, but there was no way he was going to go hard at him. Come on, AD has them all running scared.

The problem wasn't the questions that Newman was asking, the problem was AD did everything but answer those questions!
