The T Word

Postby Media Park » Wed Aug 01, 2012 10:03 pm

I am utterly amazed with some of the ridiculous long threads about crap topics throughout the year, that we have not yet sparked this debate.

Not long after being considered a sinner for his AIDS-related tweet, Brock McLean has turned whistleblowing Messiah in calling out his former club.

McLean made quite a stunning statement that whilst he was at Melbourne, they (the Demons) were tanking.

For a current player to make such a call is fairly rare, but almost immediately, former team-mate, retired ruckman Paul Johnson has come out in support.

If they did tank it proved to be a futile exercise because they squandered the opportunity to draft Nic Naitanui.

Off course it goes on!!!

Should be like the NBA where the bottom X amount of teams go into a lottery to see what order the bottom X picks are in.

Always thought the nba lottery system was a good way to do it.
There are no priority picks now anyway are there? So it doesn't really matter now

Matters to the extent that finishing bottom, as opposed to second bottom, gives a club the pick of the talent pool.

But they could still tank to finish lower.

1-5 go into the lottery would be a great idea IMO

The problem is, all this should have happened 10 years ago.

The fact of the matter is that there are some clubs who have benefited from priority picks and continual early picks, whilst others who finish slightly above, have had minimal decent draft picks.

For a system that is supposed to promote "fairness", its incredibly unfair and inequitable.

Yeah but credit for when it's due. I get what you're saying. It'll be interesting if he's with us next year. If so, for depth only I'd suggest and on a short term contract if he were to accept that.

The draft should be reflective on positions after round 10, you'd think all clubs go in thinking they have a chance of finals from the get-go, that way they can do as they want in the last few rounds as far as getting surgery done early and giving the youth a try.

Then the last couple of months are just gonna be huge blowouts. And since the AFL is in the entertainment business, I dont think many people would rate that. How about teams try their hardest to win every match they are involved in and worry about the Draft after the season. The difference between Pick 1 and Pick 10 isnt great enough to throw games in a professional league. Pretty sure a few Pakistani crickets went to the slammer for deliberatly lossing...sure they did it for money, but AFL clubs are doing it to rig the draft, which has a flow on effect to the rest of the 17 teams.

Can't knock his work since being a regular in the team. Racking up touches and clearances. Should have a place over Dennis Armfield or Aaron Joseph.

I think it matters now due to the fact that the year that McLean is alleging that this occurred is the year that the Demons managed to secure a priority pick (by having less than 3 wins). This was used to secure Tom Scully at number one & then Jack Trengove at pick two.

As a result of Tom Scully being taken by the GWS, they were rewarded a compensation pick to be used directly after the Demon’s first round draft pick this season. Giving the Demon’s what could be picks 3 & 4 in this draft. A guilty finding might find this put in jeopardy???

Who knows from the AFL.

Ban drafting & go back to zoning! :D
