50 Metre Penalties are Bollocks!

For anyone of my vintage you would remember when Footy had a 15 metre penalty. Then in 1988 I think it was they brought in the 50 metre penalty and I thought it sucked then and it sucks even harder now. For example.

Throw the ball back to the wrong guy - 50
Being within 5m of the protected area - 50
I'm a self important umpire who is trying to assert 'authority' - 50
Demonstronable behaviour - 50
Touching a guy after he has marked - 50
Interchange free kick - 50

IT'S ALL CARP! Fair enough if you whack a guy after he has taken the mark or you are deliberately wasting time or you are over the mark despite being told to move back but FFS be like the SANFL and bring in a 25m penalty because all of the above is absolute bollocks.

And once again my I say **** KB.

Obvious solution I reckon is for 2 catgories. Most serious "offences" = 50 metres. "Professional free kick" for example.

Less serious 15 metres.

I guess the issue would be what indiscretions would come under which category though.

I think the 25 metre penalty in SANFL works perfectly. Bring it into the AFL.

Maybe instead of taking them 50m forward the penalty could be 50m sidewards, thats what their trying to go anyway. ;)

Agree with a few on here. Just 2 days ago I said to my kids that I think the SANFL have it right with the 25/50m rule. 25m seems perfect for small infringements as the 15 was too small and some teams were willing to give away 15s to hold up play.

Spot on wedge - 15m penalty would actually disadvantage the receiving team - even 25m penalties could be seen as disadvantagious if it didnt result in a shot for goal... Not the biggest problem/issue with the game I dont think.

This one annoys me the most.
We played on Wednesday and an opposition player took a mark near the boundary.
I made sure I was at least 5 metres away from him, but he kept coming closer to me as he tried to sneak around.
Then he had the nerve to try and get the umpire to pin me for being closer than 5 metres.
I then shouted at him "Well stop walking towards me you d*ckhead" which got a great laugh from the crowd.
Players use this rule to their advantage too much and you see it all the time in the AFL when taggers/defenders can't chase their man for fear of giving away 50.

Agree REB.
Even on Wednesday's game, it was interpreted inconsistently from what I saw, with Collingwood getting two, and Essendon not one for the same "infringement". Especially when all someone is doing is getting to the mark or running down the field.
The touching a bloke whose marked the ball annoys me too, esepcially combined with it's opposite, where the umpire calls a player to play on at the merest hint of him looking sideways. Must be shockingly confusing for the players.

50's were introduced to stop the blatant 15m penalties being given away by way of 'professional' tactics. It's gone overboard - as everything does in the AFL, they go to exteme and penalise players for being a p00ftenth of a centimetre over the mark.

Agree with most of what is said above. There is a great need for a 25m penalty in the AFL.

I think a better idea is the send off rule. But this can be reviewed as the play is rolling by an umpire with camera angles in the stand and then when the play stops the field umpire can send the offender off after receiveing the relayed message. Obviously these send off laws would have to be specified and justified but to me if it works in so many sports then it can work in the AFL.

If it's not bad enough then the 50 metre rule is fine, but as it is occuring the player receiving the kick should be able to play on @ any time as the 50 metre penalty is being awarded.
