Which club is going to be first to....

Concentrate on goal kicking at training?

So many set shots go astray, costing teams momentum and potentially games. So which club will be the first to realise that goal kicking wins and loses games and dedicate some time at training on it?

Yes it is strange.
Last year I went to a few Essendon trainings and they wouldn't have spent 15 minutes on goal kicking.
I remember going to Windy Hill a few years back and after training finished Lloydy and Lucas stayed for probably and hour and a half taking set shots. I believe Lloyd would regularly do this and no suprise he was one of the most accurate forwards of all time

If you can't kick straight by the time you reach AFL level, you never will.

BT (yes, i know he's a knob) said the reason why he got out of the 'goal kicking coach' scene was because the fitness experts would be watching like a hawk and not let any player take more than 15 shots in one session because they were worried about the effect it would have on the players hips and hammys.

FFS. SOMEONE TEACH AFL PLAYERS HOW TO KICK FOR GOAL FROM A SET SHOT!

It cost Carlton on Monday and now Geelong are having the yips. IT'S NOT THAT DIFFICULT!

I completely and utterly disagree.

Because, most players haven't been taught technique. Technique is something you can teach, very easily.

This is bullshite, you can be taught how to rectify simple mistakes. I have done it with B graders in the country. Running straight and kicking through the ball aint that hard. Most important thing is to run STRAIGHT, including the last step, all needs to be towards the centre of the sticks.

Yes, I am good for the record

So I watched the Bulldogs v Cats game on Friday night and the Dogs stuffed this one up. I'm not saying they would've won, but they would've given themselves a much better chance of winning if they'd kicked straight from set shots.

"Sammy" Newman is the man for that - as he demonstrated in one of the old players matches not long ago.
Now there's an actually useful role for him!

Bump.

James brayshaw recently likened it to a cricket team not spending any time practicing catching.

Carlton missed numerous set shots again tonight.

Wake up you lot!

If you listen to any radio show from Melbourne, you'll realise no team does. The fitness guru's don't allow it because of fatiguing certain parts of the players bodies. Brian Taylor apparently quit his goalkicking coaching role with the Western Bulldogs a few years ago when he realised they dedicated zero time to the skill at practice.

Lloyd, Taylor, Dunstall have all said at various times during radio segments that they used to spend an extra night out at training just kicking 100-150 balls. THe players now don't have that luxury of having an extra day to practice, therefore the skill is lost.

It's a farce and needs to change. And unbelievably the first team to do it at training and 'perfect' it, it will repay them many times over thereby REVOLUTIONISING the game!

Those blokes also mentioned that a contributing factor could also be the pace of the game. They estimate the heart rate of a player taking a set shot could be anywhere up to 50 BPM higher than when they played.

So any practise that they do should be simulated match conditions by sprinting for the ball then taking the shot.
