Talk on the national game

Melbourne Season 2012

Postby stan » Sun Sep 25, 2011 9:50 am

With a new (un tried) coach signed and a star player gone for big cash is there some tough times ahead at Melbourne? The reason I pose this questions is that Warnock and Bate are looking at heading out for more opptunity. With a Media type like Garry Lyon who is at the moment working with the football, and really commenting on most things in football is poor old Mark Neald walking into what can only be described as an implosion waiting to happen?

Well to answer my own question I believe Neald is a man who will be able to right the wrongs and chance the direction of melbourne. Firstly they have some great senior players. Add to the fact that watts and trengrove will only get better, grimes and a few others will be back.

But for some reason they just either dont have the desire or there is something wrong between the ears at the club. Does Garry Lyon need to choose his football club or the media?

I for one had them on a steady improve looking at playing finals either this year or next with the amount of young talent they have at the moment. In my opinion I believe Neald will be good for the club but its going to be hard with Lyon in the media and as part of the Football club banging on about everything.

Just a few questions to raise a bit of debate about next season.

Dont know if they can improve, most teams do improve after receiving early draft picks from previous years when they have finished down the bottom.Off field issues with some of the players saying they have major problems with Cameron Schwab and Chris Connelly, probably need some cleanout and get the club to move in the same direction.

Hats off to ya hottie Melbourne and bloody South Adelaide you must be friggin patient! Mate I reckon you can and will improve. Let's face it Bailey thought a press was something that Bea Smith used in Prisoner. He had no friggin idea and Viney was next to him in the box for a while as they both sat there and scratched their heads. Your new man Neeld has graduated with honours from Malthouse University and you might have a decent game plan for the first time since Balmey was around.

As for Scully you've done beautifully there as his knee is rooted and you got the same compensation that we did for Gary Friggin Ablett if you please. Nah mate you'll be onwards and upwards in the eight either in 2012 or 2013 at latest. No matter what happens, it's got to be better than the last five seasons.

Melbourne should go apologise to Joe Gutnik and get him back on side with some decent cash flow running through the club once again, like it or lump it in most cases finances dictates success in the modern competiton, it buys the best coaches and players and all the required trimmings such as hyperbaric chambers and so on to go with it.

Both Jade Rawlings and now-retired Collingwood player Leigh Brown have joined Melbourne as Assistant Coaches.

Melbourne 2012 thread

Trengove and Grimes have been named co-captains this year, Trengove apparently the youngest AFL/VFL skipper ever.

Saw Mark Neeld on the couch tonight ... my first thought is that this fella is a tad naive to be a senior coach but time will tell.

It's pretty hard to make a case for the Demons but seeing as my son barracks for them (DOH) I end up watching them quite a bit. Clearly Neeld has borrowed the Pies' playbook and they were going from contest to contest around the boundary line. The problem was the entries into the forward fifty. They were just bombing it high and sitting it on Clark's and Howe's heads, giving them no chance of clunking a mark.

Halfway through the first term it was clear to me this wasn't working so Neeld, a man who has forgotten more about football than I ever knew in the first place must have also noticed this. The answer lies in workrate. The Pies have Travis Cloke running hard and creating space and offering leads and as yet Clark and Howe do not do this. The more they play together the sooner you will see one of these guys lead up to mark the ball on the forward flanks. Melbourne will get a lot better once the forward line is less congested.

Perhaps emotion played it's part in Melbourne's uninspiring first round effort but it won't get any easier next week...off to Paterson's Curse to take on an impressive looking West Coast. Melbourne fans will have to continue being patient a while longer becuase as far as I can see thier year is over already.

Wow;

THE BOARD of the Melbourne Football Club today met to consider its sponsorships with EnergyWatch and Freedom SEO.

The comments made by their CEO are disgraceful and abhorrent.

The Club has terminated these sponsorships, effective immediately.
