Motlop x 2
Meyer
Brogan
Chad

Trade bait:
Salopek
Pearce

K Cornes (unlikely to get any interest, although if we pay majority of his salary, then possibly he may find a new home)

Will post my 2012 line-up, delistings and trade bait list tomorrow.

Mitch Banner – 9 games this year to go to 19 for his career. Moved from the Eagles to the Magpies and has taken a fair step forward since doing so. Played good football for the Magpies in the SANFL without setting the world on fire but when given the opportunity later into 2011 he took his chance and showed he has something to offer. Keep him.
Travis Boak – 21 games this year to go to 90 for his career. Gun. Smoking gun about to move to the next level in his development. Has it all, gets the ball, uses it well, isn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty and kicks goals ( 12 this year ) which is good enough for a midfielder and he is good enough for me. Never, never let him go. I think getting his signature has been the catalyst for Trengove and other young targets to sign on. I’ve got a man crush on Boaky.
Matthew Broadbent – 19 games this year to go to 33 for his career. First and foremost, one to keep. Secondly, a frustrating one to watch. He can burn the ball, but he does know how to find it. He can be an option in front of goal, but his lack of a yard of pace can hurt defensively. I like Broady, I think he can improve alot and is already a sound contributor. For mine, he’s too slow for the quicker half forwards, so he goes forward, but I like him in the middle. Build your engine lad. Keep him.
Dean Brogan – 12 games this year to go to 174 for his career. What can I say. Broges has carried our big man department since the retirement of Lade and having played in our 2004 Premiership side he is one of our most treasured players. Sound ability, fierce desire to win, great team man, great club man. Not happy he now seems to have the desire to play on at GWS, if he does, Im don’t knock him for having a go at it, but for mine, his body is shot. Good luck to you Broges, good luck.”retired”
John Butcher – 4 games this year in his debut season. THE BUTCH!!! What do we have to do to keep him? DO IT!!! You cant get too excited about a young, rangey forward with sticky hands who, despite having a suspect kicking action just keeps slotting them through. Bollocks! I can. This bloke, hopefully following in Trengoves shoes, will sign with Port and with another summer of muscle on board be a real focal point for us in 2012. Absolute must keep
Alipate Carlile – 17 games this year to go to 91 for his career. Well, Bob, what do we do with you. Recently re-signed with the Power and yes,I am happy he did. I think he was playing too heavy this year after bulking up in the summer of 2010/11 and I think all footy fans thought he looked slow. With not many rock ape forwards playing just from the square he needs to get more mobile. We’ve kept him, we’ve got to make him work. Keep him.
Domenic Cassisi – 13 games the year to go to 184 for his career. Like many AFL captains, he isnt necessarily our best player ( Maxwell, Ling, etc ) but he just about our most important. His busted leg did us no favours, we lost all competitive spirit in the middle of the ground for many weeks and just got smashed around the clearances. He was running on empty the last 5 weeks and kept fighting. Like the coach, tough being in the medias sights when you win 3 games for the year but this bloke handles it well. A great bloke to have as captain. Port player for life.
Troy Chaplin – 21 games this year to go to 122 for his career. Has taken over from Chad as our sweeping half back and as the third man up in contests to help the key defenders. Oddly this year, his ball use deserted him. He is a great kick, thats why they give him the ball at half back to deliver it up ground, but he burnt it alot this year and under a weight of constant pressure he fell over a couple of times, but who would wanted to be a defender for Port this year? He’s a keeper though.
Chad Cornes – 9 games this year to go to 239 for his career.Tough one this one., very tough one. The bloke in our side that you loved to hate, and we loved that you hated him! Gun at his best, the best CHB in a Premiership season, quality forward when needed and destructive swing-man when thron on the ball. How was he treated this year? Strangely, no doubt, but I can see what the coach and club are wanting to do but to end his career ( Port one any way ) fit and in the stands retired is not right. Not the way he deserved to finish with us and I have no doubt he has the want and now the desire to be an inaugural Giant.Seeya Chad.
Kane Cornes – 17 games this year to go to 223 for his career. Well, dropped mid-season, brought back in, dropped again, still got two years to go on a contract, being told to change his game, not being played in the role he is best at, lacking penetration in his kick and confidence in general but who can blame the bloke? Unlucky this season for mine, needs to play as a midfield stick-to-his man run with player and nothing more. We must use Kane better. Stopped some real guns at his best and with his elite running he still can. Keeping him.
Jason Davenport – 4 games this year to go to 28 for his career. Oddly brought in during the year after struggling at West Adelaide and the likes of Ebert and Rodan were missing out. Really hasn’t given us much than a couple of little highlights in the last 2 years and is set to be delisted.
Brett Ebert – 12 games this year to go to 150 for his career.See above, oddly missed some games during the year when less deserving were getting picked, but, fair to say he was not anywhere near 100% fit at any stage and although uncontracted I would expect him to stay and be important for us forward AND in the midfield next year.Get him fit and we will see him flourish again. Another with the LARS implant. Is it as good as the real thing? Got to get him to sign. Keep him.
Robert Gray – 22 games this year to go to 68 for his career.See Boak.Gun. Hits the front-and-centre of packs at the perfect time, can take a grab on the lead, uses his body well, uses the ball well, knows where the goals are, has a little bit of mongrel about him, quiet mongrel but some mongrel and looks to love playing the game because he knows he can get it when its near him. Another who having recently signed on makes the young blokes look committed to this club. We’ve kept him.Beauty.
Hamish Hartlett – 16 games this year to go to 31 for his career. As evidenced by his 16 games in 2011 Hamish has taken the next step in his development by getting his body more and more sound. Undoubted ability but all still question his durability. This is a big summer for Hamish, get himself right and play more than 16 games next year and he will be very important to us. Adelaide boy who you would think unlikely to want to leave. Keeping him.
Cameron Hitchcock – 13 games this year t go to 30 for his career. He can kick goals and he can find the ball but Im not sure he likes to go in balls and all to win it. I hope he has been shown a passage of play from the second Crows game where the unquestionable commitment of Patty Dangerfield showed up the meek effort of Hitchy and he works on it over the summer.Potential trade bait if the right deal came along as we have Ebert, Rodan, Gray, and Boak who can play a small forward role and with Schulz, Westhoff and Butcher in the front half there wont be alot of room for him at times. Keep him if we cant get any value for him.
Ben Jacobs – 12 games this year in his debut season. A likely type this one. Got his chance early, got hurt and bounced back. Tallish half-back/back-pocket who runs well and uses the ball very, very well. Can see him running the flank and wings delivering to the forward half. A high draft pick coming into his own. Keep him.
Mathew Lobbe – 10 games this year to go to 13 for his career.Well we have plucked him from Westies seconds and given him a the last half of this year to develop. Interesting no other young ruckman were trailled, just Lobbes. I think he has done better than ok and will go alright next year. He took his chances this year, kept doing enough to get picked and I hope he works his arse off over summer to get fitter. Keeping him.
Tom Logan – 20 games this year to go to 92 for his career. Has taken Kanes role in many ways as the run-with stopper who can gather the ball for himself. Skills are a bit suspect but endeavour cant be questioned. One of the real in-and-under guys we sorely need fit. We keep him, but I truly think in a ideal world he is a player who adds depth, not build a team around.
Danny Meyer – 0 games this year to go to 26 for his career. I don’t want to be too harsh on the bloke.Goodbye.
Andrew Moore – 6 games this year to go to 13 for his career. Well, much lauded by Port heirachy, North fans will dispute this however, but his signature was much sought after at Alberton and indeed he signed on again. Good to see we are keeping our youngsters and this half-backman has a lot riding on his development.Keeper.
Daniel Motlop – 13 games this year to go to 130 for his career. Everyone knows what he is capable of but he’s lazy and selfish at times. I’ve been one to defend Motlop because watching him at the ground he typically chases hard when the opposition get the ball.I doubt he holds any currency at the trade table so delisting, if it has not already, is on the horizon. Seeya Mots.
Marlon Motlop – 0 games this year to go to 5 for his “career”. Moved to Westies reserves from Norths reserves. Nuff said. Delisted.
Ben Newton – 0 games. Yet to debut.
Cam O’Shea – 18 games in his debut season.Promising rangy half-back/back-pocket who is happy to get his hands dirty. Needs to bulk up but I can see some real promise in this kid. Another keeper.
Danyle Pearce – 19 games this year to go to 134 in his career. How frustrating has this bloke been since winning his Rising Star award? Great skills, now has the body size to deal with the tough game and at times this year I saw him do the team thing. Head down and getting the ball then 5 minutes later he’s squibbing it on the wing. If we can trade him on I’d be happy to do so. If not, he is someone we can pick with some confidence and adds to our outside midfield ranks. Trade / Keep.
Michael Pettigrew – 12 games this year to go to 103 for his career. Looked like a forward when he first started, made an impact in defence as a tallish backman who could also play small. Not sure he does much more than add to our defensive depth and I doubt he offers any trade value. 100 gamer who might just be on the outer with the generational change at Alberton. Delist.
Simon Phillips – 8 games this year to go to 13 for his career. For mine, the bloke is too slight and gets knocked off the ball far too easily. No lack of endeavour or skill but as a mature age recruit he is not a mature body and I think he has another year to run on his contract. Needs to show a lot more next year.Keep.Just.
Jasper Pittard – 13 games in his debut season. Don’t just remember this kid for his kick-in cock up against the Gold Coast late in the game as he has terrific skills, kicks really well, runs hard and sticks like the preverbial to a blanket. Has a real solid future ahead of him. Must keep.
Jarrad Redden – Yet to debut. Big man who is developing nicely and I was surprised he didn’t get a run at all in 2011. Will see him next year.
David Rodan – 16 games this year to go to 166 for his career. Two LARS op’s later and D-Rod still flashes in and out of packs to kick goals. Really has blossomed since leaving Punt Rd ( Who wouldn’t?) and is a crowd favourite. Hopefully a full pre-season can see him near 100% fit and back in our mid-field rotations. Keep.
Steven Salopek – 12 games this year to go to 121 for his career. Spent a couple of stints back at Glenelg either out of form or favour and once again had a limited pre-season with shoulder surgery late last year. Had too many ops to count and I suspect his body is now just that, suspect. Quality ball user who I hope we can get right and fit and firing he adds to our midfield. Need him fit in 2012. Keeper.
Nick Salter – 6 games this year to go to 21 for his career. Got a late call up in 2011, for mine, to give him one last crack at it and I don’t think he took it with both hands. Used as a backman when he is clearly a forward but our front half bigman department is ok. Was used to fill a gap while Chaplin and Carlile were out. Will enjoy his time back at the Eagles. Delisted.
Jay Schulz – 16 games this yeat to go to 103 for his career. This bloke ( see Rodan – Punt Road ) has enjoyed his time at Port and I don’t think anyone at AFL level has ever doubted his ability. Great contested mark, reliable kick and is capable of kicking 50-60 goals (+) in a season with the right delivery. Hurt his knee and didn’t look right when he was rushed back into the side sitting bottom. Keeper.
Daniel Stewart – 12 games this year to go to 23 for his career. 200cm+ mobile bloke who can take a grab. Seems to be pigeon holed as a forward when we need ruckman. North fans and coaches rate him so lets see if he can develop his motor to become a genuine ruckman/forward who offers a target like the good big men do. Keeper.
Paul Stewart – 6 games this year to go to 44 for his career. Had 2011 derailed by injury just when he had moved out of the back-half into the middle. Was asked to improve his running capacity, did, and earnt the rewards he got. Midfield time. Will get better with some bulk on and hes a keeper.
Jacob Surjan – 8 games this year to go to 108 for his career. Languished at the Magpies, IMO not performing well, got a call up to the Power and by his own admission was not fit enough from day 1 of pre-season. Had off season surgery last year and needs to pull his finger out in 2012. I expect him too as he seems a tough little unti who prides himself on his ball winning. Could offer some trade value to the WA clubs, his home state. Trade / Keep.
Matt Thomas – 19 games this year to go to 68 for his career. Tough. Real tough. But you need to be more than that in the modern day game and Thomo is developing his ball use and decision making ability. One of my favourites because he is willing to bleed for the guernsey. Keeper.
Jackson Trengove – 22 games this year to go to 41 for his career. We wanted his signature, no, we needed his signature and we got it. This kid can play. Tall running back, CHF option, pinch hitting ruckman who will one day go nuts. He’ll either kick 8 or kick someone. I love this bloke. Man crush. Might just be our next skipper. Keep, keep, we kept !!!
Justin Westhoff – 20 games this year to go to 89 for his career. Much maligned hugely talented bloke who surely gets told to eat as much pizza and KFC as he wants. Been trying to size up for years but seemingly cant. Deceptively tall and very mobile he offers great flexibility to our big man department as a forward/ruckman. Looks to realy rely on confidence and playing in a team that wins three for the year, it ‘aint easy to do.Keeper and lets see him fire in 2012.
Aaron Young – Yet to debut.
PAFC. Forever.

So to delist:
Davenport
Meyer
Motlop
Motlop
Salter
Pettigrew

"Retired":
Cornes
Brogan

Trade bait:
Surjan ( WA clubs for Griffen )
Pearce
Hitchcock

We need :
A ruckman to lead or back up Lobbe. Griffen would be a great fit, not a super player, but instant back up for Lobbe.
A fit Salopek to be an outside runner to either help Pearce or who replaces him.
Our spine - Schulz,Butcher/Westhoff,Chaplin/Trangove,Carlile is sound but perhaps another taller backman to allow Trengove to ruck/forward would be of help.

Nice work Booney, lot of effort & thought went into that. 8)

2012 is a big year for a fair number of those guys on that list (if indeed they all are retained) - Rodan, Salopek, Carlile, Broadbent, Surjan, Ebert, Hitchcock, both Stewarts (IMO). All pretty much playing for their careers. You'd seriously hope that this would put a bit of fire in the guts of 'em, coupled with a thoroughly embarrassing 2011 as a Club on the whole.

The one that worries me a lot is Rodan. :? Sure, he has had a wretched career, punctuated by serious knee injuries, but this year I saw a lack of desire on the field far too often. Being 'unfit' doesn't cut it I'm afraid, and as a senior player on our list, has to show far better commitment & leadership on a very young list to warrant getting a game each week. Fitness doesn't dictate heart & passion. Comparing his inaugural LARS return match, where he had upteen clearances & near on 30 disposals (IIRC) and was a kamikaze livewire for 120mins, to some of the unenthusiastic spectating I witnessed this year, is just incomparable. :(

Lots to look forward to though. 8)

M Motlop and Meyer (retired from AFL football) have been delisted, and Hay and M Westhoff removed from the rookie list.

I would think this is only the initial delistings and more will be made in the coming months.

Expect improvements next year, but only minimal really..... slight move up the ladder but as long as we start to look like we are on the way up and have some players really step up, then maybe 2013-2014 could see us have a birth back into finals :)

but one year at a time :(

I believe port are set to announce Shaun Rehn and Josh Carr as assistant coaches, with Brad Gotch filling the position of career coach.

i think the brad ebert brent ranouf pick ups are going to be bigger than some might expect for the power.

the midfield has really been ports week spot in recent times and to add a hard inside type player like brad will be a vast imporovement to the majority of our outside receiver type players.

ranouf to palm it down to him and others with a never say die attitude similer to brogans to play tandem with lobbe is another big tick for me.

really excited about the coaches as well especially rehn and carr - two really tough competitors and their credentials speak for themselves.

can't wait for round 1 go power!

Welcome aboard double decker, nice to see a Sturt supporter among our ranks too 8)

FWIW, I reckon you're right about Renouf and Ebert, 2 fairly handy pick ups. I just hope we select wisely with our pick 6 (as well as our later picks).

Hopefully he adapts well to the role.

Thoughts?

Doesn't make a lot of sense given his age, but still he could be handy for a year or 2 in the back pocket.

To be honest, I don't mind if we get him or not.

Like i said on the other board, if we get him at bargain basement, then can be very handy for the development of our backline.

Disagree. Waste of time/space.

We treat Chad like shit this year while moving towards a youth policy and if we recruit Davis I'll be pissed.
