heard on the news that the AFL were down nearly 6% on attendances this year, and they are predicting that next year will be down also.

what reasons do you believe contribute to this?

Telecasts live against the gate. Or only slightly-delayed telecasts.

Port playing like sh1t. Adelaide getting beaten.

Brisbane playing like sh1t.

Gold Coast not being able to draw a crowd.

Expensive to go to the footy.

Massive gulf between the good and ordinary teams (only going to get worse).

That'll do for now.

leave some for other posters "gadj" what about the standard of umpiring, constant tinkering of the rules just to justify a rules committee. the only good rule that has been introduced is the protecting of the head but we still see plenty of blokes getting knocked out from head high contact.

1. The talent pool is spread to thin and the quality of the product is down - see blowouts, 2011.
2. The rules committee have ****** up the game so much they've alienated the fans who are turning away
3. SA footy is ****** so no one is going
4. The Lions are crap so no one is going
5. Sydney fans don't go unless the Swans are top four
6. The revenue first Collingwood Football League has become a joke that people aren't laughing at any more.

There's breaking records though and there's breaking records. While the SANFL crowds are great this year, I think it's only about 500 more people per round at an SANFL game compared to last year. I don't think that's evidence of a mass switch from AFL to SANFL. There may be some link but the bottom line is that a whole lot less people in this state are attending an SANFL or an AFL game every weekend than they were 10 years ago. I'd guess that the average weekly crowd reduction in SA for AFL games is in the order of 15-25,000 per week. Only 500 of those are choosing to go to the SANFL instead. What are the other 19,500 doing? probably watching AFL on television!

I think the AFL crowds are more to do with the issues Gadj raised. Live against the gate coverage is a huge issue for attendances.

Remember too, there's live attendance and then there is viewing attendance on TV. What are the stats on those this year?

not sure how you could blame the bye? there's still the same amount of games played each week.

Rules. Tackling is on the outer and will be obsolete the way they are going.
The softness of the chop of the arms rule is ridiculous, it's become if someone doesn't take a mark in a contest then there must be a free, it does nothing for promoting strong hands.
The holding the ball rule where a player has the ball held to him is nothing short of ludicrous.
And the draw or should I say FIXture is the most arseabout in world sport.

AFL only has less people at the games overall this year as a one off because of one reason, the Gold Coast.
When you have teams like Collingwood, Essendon, etc having byes when the Gold Coast are pulling 20k or whatever it is to their oval then crowds were all going to drop.
I don't think it will happen next year when there's more games and no byes.
In fact I think the most people ever will go and watch it on TV next year pretty comfortably!

Similar to what I said in a thread I posted a few weeks ago. Reduce the teams and players; increase the quality.

Someone tried to counter it by likening it to a company expanding, it's just not the same.

Ahh yeh, never going to happen. Crowds will definitely decrease under this model, so why would the AFL be interested in this again?

Naturally, the numbers will increase next year but after that they'll start to fall away steadily. Long before this becomes a worrying and obvious (enough for the muddle headed media outlets) trend Vlad will take the money and run leaving an unfortunate series of successors that will take decades to rebuild the game after the damage this numbnuts has caused. Greater Western Sydney? Give me a break. The Swans drew 19k to a final a few years ago!

Against North Melbourne on a wet night at Homebush. Let's not forget the Swans have also drawn the biggest crowd ever outside of Melbourne. So yeah. :p

I don't like the idea of GWS. People are already pissing me off by calling them "Sydney".
