New footy stadium for Perth

I heard on the radio last night that a new multi-purpose stadium is to be built in Burswood just east of the Perth CBD. I don't know Perth very well but they said that the location is within walking distance of the CBD similar to the MCG.

It will cost around $700million and will become the new home of the Eagles and the Dockers. They are looking at 60,000 - 70,000 capacity and it will be similar in layout to Docklands but will not have a roof. It will be ready in about 2018 if I recall correctly.

Not sure if Subiaco will remain as a stadium or not - maybe Barto or someone else can provide further details. I found this link on the WAFC website.

Subi will remain as a stadium but it will be reduced in size. The Eagles are pretty keen to remain there as their training base at this stage despite rumours they might team up with Perth who have their home base just down the road from the Burswood site.

It's a bit of a hike from the CBD, probably slightly further from the city than Subi is (although I'd have to check on a map to be 100% positive). They've already approved a footbridge across the river for access from East Perth for additional transport options and there's already good access via train with the Armadale/Thornlie lines going past Burswood.

Like SA, WA has too many naysayers but I think it will happen this time.

Yet we are spending $500 million plus on just upgrading a ready made stadium

16000 people turned up today at Footy Park. They'd better start turning up once the taxpayers dollars are spent. More than the health of football in SA is at stake if the crowds dont improve markedly.

At least in Perth it's more justifiable because there are people who cant get in to sold out games at Subi.

Crowds for both the Eagles and Freo have either increased or have been steady over the last few years ... and both are healthy averages at mid 30Ks.

Completely different story here.

I'm not anti development and accept that Adelaide needs something new, whether that be a complete refit of either ground, but it's really a case of putting the cart before the horse. Build it and hope like hell that they come.

In Perth it's an absolute necessity from the point of view that the patronage is guaranteed.

Good on Perth for doing something decent.

My point more is that we are going to spend three quarters of the amount for an upgrade to a ready made 35K stadium while in Perth they are going to get a full enclose brand new stadium.

I think that estimate seems very light on when the Libs proposal for ours 2 years ago was $900m with the roof making upo only $50m of that according to someone on here.

I think Ethiad stadium was $400m 15 years ago. Construction costs have gone up a lot since then. I know because I had a house built about then.

whufc, don't you think the $700m seems to good to be true? There's contra commentary on the Perth stadium that suggests it will cost more like $1b.

It's just like renovating a house, you can spend 100k to add a few rooms to an existing house but you can build an entire new house for 140k

Using that train of thought though why did the Gabba, SCG and the MCG get upgraded several times each? Location ...

Barto may shoot me down here but my impression from visits to Perth is that it is badly in need of a development like this so good on them for getting this going. When people from our Perth office visit here they comment on how developed they think the Adelaide CBD is :o Usually we are critical of our own backyard.

surely not that couldnt possibly happen, just like AO wont cost anymore than the $500 m figure hey

Well, you have been pretty certain it will happen here but now you are jumping all over this estimate out of Perth as though they have nailed it! It's pretty common I notice for the anti-AO development camp to talk up the costs here but talk down any estimates on new stadiums.

What about the add-ons? ;) :o

Enclosed as encircled, I guess. Would be even more of a waste of money having a roofed stadium in Perth than it would be in Adelaide.

This is what is pretty much accepted what the final design should look like:

Note that the location in the artist impression is actually in Subiaco as per the original Labor recommendation, but the stadium itself wont be changing, just the location.

Depends on what part of the city you're looking at. Adelaide has some things that are better than Perth and vice versa.

It's definitely needed though, people in Adel whinge about Footy Park, but its superior to Subiaco in so many ways.

Could do worse than have a smaller scale MCG. How many people love travelling to Melb and watching a game there? It's so like our local pollies (in SA as well as WA) to not look at something like that and think "yeah, this is awesome, lets copy it" its always "nah, we can do it our own way" and screw things completely.
