I haven't read the article so my comments are not based on Pendelbury's writings.
Having said that I bet he references the US Basketball and Football All-Star games. The problem with them? There is no defensive side to the game, it is a score-fest. That way the likelyhood of injury is reduced.
Can you imagine Matty Scarlett letting Chris Dawes take an uncontested mark inside 50 just so he doesn't roll an ankle?
For mine, SOO or nothing. SA v Vic the only one that matters.

The AFL can't get SOO going. AFL is one of the only sports in the world with no representative play.

The All-star weekend concept is good but the idea of turning it into a school yard pick the best contest is rubbish. As much as it would be good for SA vs Vic, i liked the dream team vs vic from the 150 yr celebrations. The best thing about SOO was beating Victoria and this still gives players a chance to do that.
the idea of a 1st yr vs 2nd yr players game also has merit as it would give those younger players an experience of playing with those from other teams and would really only enhance their development. Wonder what we could do in regards to a dunk contest equivalent.... maybe biggest specky or freakiest goal comp.

I think Scotty has some really good ideas. I wish the AFL would at least consider and look at the ideas he's come up with.

I like the concept of having the elite players of the comp back playing against each other. Also like the idea of the 1st year players vs 2nd year players. It would be very interesting to see that sort of thing go ahead.
