RD 7 VS Melbourne

Postby Gingernuts » Tue May 03, 2011 3:17 pm

So - what are people's thoughts on the team for this week?

My thoughts:

OUTS: Davis (INJ), Tambling (SUSP), Henderson (OMIT)

IN: Schmidt, Petrenko, Sloane.

Henderson has not shown much at all in the last few weeks IMO, time for a run in the SANFL I reckon.

Vince needs another week there as well IMO (didn't make the bests for the Eagles on Sunday).

Id think Gunston would be a fair chance over Schmidt

Petrenko to play off HB in the tambling role

Yep, or replacing Henderson to give us a small forward option which we are currently lacking at the moment.

I would Petrenko off HB pace which Schmidt doesnt have and Gunston who can play the Mid height athletic FWD similar to Hendo

will be at the G on sunday looking forward to a good game from the crows. Would have been in trouble if Jacobs had been rubbed out but to have him competing with Jamar is a massive bonus. Back 6 is looking decidely small but this will actually be more of a benefit rather then a hindrance against the small melbourne forward line. The more pace the better on the G so am hoping to see petrenko come in if he is in form as well as sloane back from injury.

Yes Jacobs in is a massive bonus. To think about putting Maric back in makes me feel crook.

he must be traded to GWS at the end of the year surely.

Cant see them keeping Maric next season, doubt we would get much for him.

We need a pesky little forward pocket like Ballantyne, Betts, Milne etc, I think Petrenko should be given a crack and be given more than a week to play the role. I saw someone mentioned Milera previously, he's a rookie isn't he and will need to be upgraded? But, that shouldn't be a problem with the long term injuries starting to mount up. Also, Callinan shouldn't be too far away from resuming (again a rookie who will need to be upgraded).

Big test against Melbourne, one of the 'should win' games.

They have upgraded to rookies already, they will have to put Davis on the long term injury list to upgrade another. But every club can upgrade a rookie after round 11. Callinan is out of the sling and slowlybworking his way back and willnlook to play SANFL in round 8 to 10, and Timmy milera is playing well for port magpies, but he is a fair way away from afl

Yeah i asked about Milera in the SANFL thread but got peanuts response from the Port people  While having not seen him, I undertand he is that small lindsay thomas style player which we need and will top the team off IMO

Danger game this week for the lads, Melbourne will come out firing and they have beaten us on occasions when their back has been against the wall! They are copping it in the media in melbourne even questioning Jim Stynes, mental capacity in the job

Fair enough to A Mum!

Starting to get a little concerned - Melbourne are coping a fair hiding in the media in Melbourne at the moment. Hopefully this won't prompt too much of a response from them.

When you look at the teams on paper it's very even. Both have young midfielders. Adelaide have a better forward line but a poorer defence (Melbourne's small forwards concern me). Ruck will be interesting, as good as Jacobs is he won't have the same dominance at the taps as he has in the last fortnight.

All in all this is a good test for the boys. A real chance to chalk up a great away win and prove that they are fair dinkum.

Massive game for two 'struggling' clubs.

Will be a good test of character especially over in Melbourne.

I'm tipping Crows by 11 points.

Just on Tippett - He has definitely worked his kicking action out in the last couple of weeks. Even the one he missed was straight as a die and shaved the post on Saturday night. Looked the most confident I've seen him in about 18 months.

If the midfield can get their supply clean to him, he's going to crack one open very soon IMO.

Obviously makes a helluva difference to the side, but I'm not sure why his action has only suddenly improved when it's been a clear problem for a long time. I guess they've been working on it, but his pre-season injury probably offset any gains they'd made.

There was an article a couple of weeks ago where he said a basketball mate told him to treat kicking at goal like shooting a free throw. Practice until it becomes just second nature, and also practice when your rooted after training etc to simulate the match situation where you've busted your chops to get the footy, and then have to convert.

Early days, but it seems to be working. He seems to have a routine worked out very nicely and looks far more comfortable in front of the sticks.

what i like about it is he has momentum going at the target. i noticed a couple of times last year his attack on the goal is his approach was slow and very stop start. hopefully something clicked last week and he keeps improving on this.

Seeing him live last week, he was looking that confident I called his goal from the boundary as a certainty as soon as he marked it. You can tell when a bloke has got the hunger back again. He (and many others) had that perpetual look of desparation in their eyes last year, that's gone now for Tippett IMO. A 6-8 goal game is not far away.

IN: (25) Maric, Sellar, Sloane, Petrenko, Schmidt, Gunston

Out: Martin (Omitted) Tambling (Susp) Davis (Inj)

I think Sloane and Petrenko will come back in with Sellar possibly replacing Davis.
